gearing question

Have a 94 AX15 with 3.07 gears and 30 in. tires. How close will going to 3.55 gears get me back to stock ratio(3.07 gears and 28 in. tires)
I ask because I can get a pair of diffs out of a 92 for a $100
Side note. not ever going bigger than 30 / 9.50 tires.

3.55 will be better, but I'd suggest going 4.10 or so. I don't think you'd be satisfied with the 3.07s...

You'll love the 3.55s, just don't change your mind and go bigger(even so, you can't go wrong for $100).

You'll still be a little off -- the other way. Right now, you're speedometer reads Low (you're going faster than it says) with the increase in tire ratio. Changing 3.07 to 3.55 will overcorrect that; you will now be going slower than your speedometer reads (unless you change the speedo gear in your TC to the correct one with your new setup)

The tire change decreased your end ratio 30/28=1.07
The increase in gearing will reverse that by a factor of 3.55/3.07=1.16
End result will be (3.55*28)/(30*3.07)=1.08 Overgeared (as compared to stock)

Are you paying attention? This is a 5 speed Jeep. 4.10 is a bit over kill. 3.55's are almost perfect for 31's; if they actually measure 31". I'm about to throw some 3.55's in my 5 speed XJ on 32's
