1996 hatch compatibility

I know there are differences in body parts for different years and that 1996 tends to be a transition year. I'd like to replace the back hatch and am wondering what years will work. The PO painted the bottom half of the hatch with duplicolor bed liner paint and it looks like crap and I'd rather not try to sand it off.

84-96 will 100% bolt up.

97-01 won't fit at all.

There are some differences in component parts and wiring so the closer you are to 96 the easier the swap will be. It's very difficult to rewire the hatch

I thought 84-96 were all the same, til I tried it...

Wow, that's news to me! I stand corrected, thanks.

I'll have to cross reference stuff and find the exact switchover date tomorrow if I get a chance.
