yup, at about 600 to 700 rpm (idle) the engine got very noisy n the past few days.sounds like its coming from the bottom end of the engine and reminds me of a diesel engine.Or another way 2 put it would b the way a noisy (loose) valve train sounds, only about 10 times louder. I am afraid the mains r about 2 sieze.Just my initial though tho.tiz an 89 XJ with a 4.0. there r about 189,000 miles on it.mabye its time 4 her 2 say "help, i got u out of several ditches, fix me" any suggs or ideas?

Is it an automatic? If so, could be loose flex plate bolts,

Mine did the same thing. It turned out to be loose flexplate bolts. I also thought it was my rod bearings so i changed them then my motor threw a rod :smsoap:

Also check for a cracked exhaust manifold or bad manifold gasket.
