transfeer case woes

I just recently purchased an 85 XJ 2.8 auto. The transfer case won't engage, I have already checked all the vacuum lines what would be my next step. Keep it simple this is my first 4x4, I am mechanically inclined but no experience with 4x4s

my first thought would be get under it and check the fluid level.. while under there inpect the shift linkage too.. maybe disconect it and try to shift the selector shaft manually to see if its inside or outside the t/case... i assume "won't engae" means you cannot move the shifter from 2wd at all.. i would assume the linkage to be binding. there are adjustments but i have never eneded to tackle them..

Oh, yeah it is a selec trac so it has the little vacuum switch in the console that switches to 4 hi. then it has the lever to switch to 4 lo. the vacuum lines are ok but it won't go into 4hi
