what is the 4th gear OD on an AW4? I have read .69, .70 and .75 all from fairly reliable sources. I have also heard that the older ones were deeper than the newer ones, when did this change then?

there were two ratios used.....

.71 and .75

all the info I've been gathering points to the change being made when the 4.0l went to "HO"

the final drive ratio got "taller" in the newer (23 spline) aw-4's.....

there was a recent thread ona nother forum about it......I'll try to drag the link over here.

1988 FSM ==> 0.705:1

1994 FSM ==> 0.753:1

I don't have any FSMs between those years.

The change was made due to the HO motor. 87-90 and 91-up are the ranges.

Hey, can one install the .7 in place of the .75? I think the split between OD and D is too damn large. Or am I thinking off and the .75 is actually less overdrive than the .7? Jeff

what i would like to do (not until after moab) is pull the overdrive assys out of both my parts trannies (88 and a 96) to see if they can be swapped. That woould be a lot easier than having to worry about spline count, mechanical, and electronic compatibility issues

Jeff, .070 is a deeper OD than .075, hence, you would turn less RPM with the .070 ratio.
