Attaching the ebrake cable to the ebrake shoe - this cant be that hard WTF?

Is there some kind of trick to this? 96 XJ. I can't get the spring to move far enough back to slip the cable into the bracket. I've been working at just this for the past hour.

WTF.

Ideas?

I usually attach the cable with the bracket dismounted from the backing plate during a brake overhaul. Might give that a try.
