why would this happen?

Ok I have a 2000 xj and the serpentine belt keeps coming part way off but only on the power steering pump...I sprayed a tiny bit of wd40 on the belt about a week ago because it was squeaking. It does not lose tension at all.

check your harmonic balancer to make sure its not 'walking' off the crank.

x2 on the harmonic balancer. They are known to come apart. If you do get a new one take it to a machine sop to have it balanced first. Its quite disappointing how much they are off. Don't get a professional products balancer unless you like marking TDC on the balancer yourself. They come with no marks.

Good possibility on the balancer. But, have you checked the tightness of all the power steering pump fasteners yet?

Especially the ones on the rear of the pump.

I loooked today and there were a couple that seemed loose. I also noticed that a bolt from the timing cover had come out and was pushing on the balancer. I tightened everything up...so far so good.
