5 speed with sye drive shaft length

So people say if you have an auto, with a front drive shaft from an auto, and hack and tap it works.

Then other people say if you have a 5 speed with the front drive shaft from an auto, and hack and tap it doesn't.

I have a PORC sye and auto front drive shaft. Does anyone know if this is going to work?

I understand that auto XJ's have a longer trans making the front drive shaft longer, thus being better to be used with a hack and tap. But with a sye which looks to be shorter than the hack and tap, will it still work out? Anyone done it yet? Because this weekend i plain to be putting the sye, drive shaft, and axle shims in. And i don't wanna be down my only car so wanted to check with other people that have already done this set up.

I have a 98 with AX15 and np231. RE Super Ride 3.5 w/leaf.

Thanks guys

Get the front driveshaft from a v8 ZJ. I ran one and so did many of my local friends in my 98 4.0/ax-15/SYE'd 231

What year? Because I thought grand Cherokees had a cv joint at the axle rather than a u joint. Am I wrong?
All v8 ZJ's have a u-joint on one end with a double cardan joint on the other. ZJ's were made from '93-'98. IIRC, the style driveshaft you're referring to came in ZJ's that had a 4.0 and np242.

This driveshaft will work for 3.5-5" lift.

Alright so i'll be headed to the junk yard for a zj with a v8 front driveshaft. That just goes right in? Same size u joints? Thanks again for the help!

The shaft you're looking for already has u joints. It will have a double cardan joint at the transfer case end and a u joint and the axle end. It will look like a long, skinny version of a stock xj front shaft.

This is a double cardan joint:

This is a CV Joint

I think there was a mix up in terminology.

The double cardan joint is only the double u-joint setup. Forget about the flange that's on the right. That would be instead of having a yoke.

Edit:
The top is a stock driveshaft. The others would all bolt to a SYE'd 231

Not all of them will, my 98 5.9 zj has a shaft like the one on the right, I dont know which years had what but I suspect it has to do with the t-case options etc.

Hmm this is strange, I've gone looking in several junkyards for this and every single ZJ I've seen that had a v8 had a ujoint driveshaft... Which tcase does yours have? 249?

lol i know what the difference between a double cardan setup and a cv joint is. i had tom woods build me a custom drive saft with there double cardan setup for my other xj. i just wanted to do it a little cheaper this time and use a front drive shaft with (double cardan setup) out of the junk yard.

but the width and diameter of the u joint caps off the zj are the same as the xj? so it will mount right up to my rear end and PORC sye yoke?

Yep, it's still a 1310 joint.

Yeah the 5.9 only came with a 249..here is another pic from another thread

I have an 2000 automatic and to use a front drive shaft for the rear does it have to come from an automatic as well?... looking to get a spare....

I have an SYE.

Too long if you have less lift? I'm running 2" on mine and have an opportunity to pick up a case with an sye, looking for a low cost driveshaft option

I've got a front ZJ drive on the rear of my AX-15 5spd with SYE and chrysler 8.25 rear axle. Here is a little helpful info I found elsewhere:

I have a few zj front drive shafts and I went with the longest one available with the double cardan.
