I have a bone stock 2000 XJ. I was wondering, do I need to do anything to the suspension (lift, etc.) before I can get 31x10.50's under it? I'd wanting to get Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo's but don't want to screw this up.
BTW, before I get flamed here, I searched the old topics but couldn't find anything that fit my needs....

Army,
I know you can fit 30x 9.5's under your xj with no prob, but you may need to go with a minimum of 1 and 3/4 inches of lift if you want to put the 31's in. This is assuming your not going to trim fenders!. 2 inches of lift is prob best for 31's if you dont' do any offroading, if you do go offroading definately go with 3 inches at least. But for just common everyday use the 31's under 2 inches is fine.

If you're wheelin, 3" will not clear an actual 31" tire without trimming.
I ran 30's on my '99 with 2"...rubbed at full lock offroad.
I ran 31" trXus on 4.5" of lift and it rubbed up front (bumper)
None of the rubbing was a big deal, but it will rub.

Actually, you can fit them, if you have the Up Country package. I have them on my 97, I have flexed my suspension hard enough to get on 3 wheels. Even off road, the rubbing is tolerable. I know that the fenders on the 96 down models and the ones on my 97 are different, so you may need to do more to the front of the fender well. on the rears I just rolled the quarter seam flat so it wouldnt cut into the tires.

I found a nice tire size chart. I'll go with the 30x9's, since I need tires and don't have time to get the lift under there. I appreciate the reply's.

Good choice.

Add some JKS sway bar disconnects and you are set. That is if you plan of doing any off-roading with it....
Cheap and easy!!

I just put JKS discos on my '01 with 2" BB & 30 x 9.50's, it was tickling the flares all day yesterday when flexing. It didn't pop them off or rip them up, but you could really hear them.

Whoozey,
Are you still using the stock Cherokee wheels or aftermarket with more backspacing?
I was always under the impression that if you could stay with the stock wheels you wouldn't rub on the flares as much because the tires would stuff into the fender.

I have a 94 with a 3" RE and 31X10.5 AT's. removed the rear sway bar and disconnected the front by drilling the bolts and adding wing nuts with pins to keep them from backing off. My wheels barely rubbed even on three wheels. after adding after market 15x8 rims they seemed to be the same, but now i've cut my fenders and installed TJ flares and they'll never touch.

This is definitely correct for the old style flares, even up through 31x10.50s. 30s on stock rims should be no problem even on a newer body style XJ.
It would be very helpful if people with all these horror stories about severe rubbing would just post what they run for rims, and what the back spacing is. Without that information the post is useless.

I have 95 with 3" lift and 31" ATs. Put on 15x8 rockcrawler rims with 3.75" backspacing.
i had minimal rubbing on the fenders and more rubbing on the rear of the fender at full flex. it was nothing a utility knife couldn't handle...
i would say you would need some sort of lift to get the 31's on without major rubbing.

Ok, I have a 2 inch lift with 31 inch tires and stock rims. You can email me if you want and i can send you pictures if you want to see how far i can flex it until i rub fenders. For not offroading hardcore, a 2 inch with 31 inch tires on stock rims should be fine for just like a daily driver. If you want to venture offroad some it should work too, now when i say offroad some, i dont' mean pulling the swaybars off and trying as hard as possible to flex it. Your looking at making your jeep look good with some bigger tires. obviously the hard core fanatics willl say you'll rub etc etc...but your not doing an RTI here so you'll be fine, there's a little motto me and my friends have though, order more lift than what you think you want, and you'll be happy with it. Thus I'd go with a 2" to a 3". Personally I did the 2 inch lift, and I want another inch. my email is majosr@clarkson.edu, if any of you want to see the pictures, or im me on aol my sn is majo2784

run them bro, run them. dont listen to what anybody says about it rubbing, just run them. judging from the question you just asked, im sure your not going to rub those 31s at all. hell I might even try 32s:D

Well, here's the deal. I would LOVE to go with a 3 or 4" lift, but I really do need the tires now. I want the biggest I can fit on a stock suspension without too much interference. I figure that's the 30x9's...
Lifts cost $$$...I don't have $$$. I'm in the military for pete's sake.

Here's a question...
I know some of you might not care too much, but there has to be someone out there who knows.
If I go with a bigger tire, my speedo will be off (reading low). How difficult is it to change out the drive/driven gears in the trans to compensate for the change? Is it really even necessary if I go to a 30x9? It shouldn't be off by too much, right?

Friend of a friend ran 30x9.5 AT and while at the sand dunes proceeded to tear all four fender flares off while bouncing through the whoops. pretty funny to look through my rearview mirror and see this knuckleheads flares go shooting off in all directions. didn't do his new tires any good either...

I run 30x9.50s (with stock OEM rims) on a completely stock '88 with 239,000 miles on it. I get very slight rubbing against the lower control arms at full steering lock, and that's all.
According to Ed Stevens' web site, with stock rims on the '84 thru '96 body you can run up to 31x10.50s and only need to extend the rear bump stops (or use the longer Up Country/MJ rear bump stops). There will be LCA rubbing but that can be addressed by shimming the stop bolt on the steering knuckles.
The speedo on my '88 is accurate with 215/75R15s. The jump from those to 30x9.50s is 6%, and the jump from 215s to 31x10.50s is 10%. You can probably keep track of that in your head, but changing the speedo drive gear is not a big deal. It's a plastic gear that fits into a carrier. It's on the driver's side of the transfer case tailshaft housing.

I have a 4" lift with 31's. The speedo difference is tiny. About 2 miles an hour at 55 mph. I see 3" lifts with 31's and it is ok. If you are stock and going to stay stock you should run close to stock tires IMHO. Big tires don't look very good when you are at stock hight.

i have a stock 96 2 door with 31x10.5 and i only rub a little on the front control arms. i someone flexed it and the rear tires only rubbed slightly in the back side of the flares.
