Hey whats up guys. I'm currently in the market to buy an xj and i was wondering if the xj's came with a 4.2 like some of the yj's? If they did, What was their year span? thanks.

258cid never saw life in an XJ-- started with the "oh so powerful" 2.8L (84-86) which was replaced by the 4.0L Powertech (87-90) which was followed by the 4.0H.O. in '91.

You could pull the crank from a 4.2 and put in your 4.0 block though, check out this link www.jeepstrokers.com

if you put the 4.2 crank in you need other mods too right? can use just the crank

Building a stroker motor is much more involved that just changing the crank. There are forums dedicated just to the strokers.

Besides, a stock OBDII 4.0L is more powerful than a Carburated YJ 4.2 L and isn't as finicky.

For super bonus fun points: '82 AMC Eagle wagon with the Carter carb.
Loved the Eagle, hated that carb.
even a stock NON-HO 4.0 (87-90) has more power than a 4.2

I dont want a 4.2 haha. That's why i wanted to make sure.
Had a friend that swapped a 4.0 into his Eagle wagon. That was a sweet ride.

I loved them, too. What livened them up was a GM HEI distributor and a Weber 36/36 carb.
