which direction does timing cover seal go

replacing harmonic balancer on 89 4.0

pulled out old timing cover seal

which direction does the new one get installed? spring out or spring in?

i realized i should have looked at the old one right about the time it was flying through the air

Spring is inside...
Just replaced the seal and harmonic balancer on mine about 1 month ago.
