have a 89 cherokee laredo i6 4.0 automatic 4x4. problem is transmission shifts violently from 3rd to 4th in comfort mode. Almost sounds like it finds the gear then bounces out of it and finds it again. I already posted a thread on this once and no one really has replied. I'm hoping that it maybe a tv cable, tps, band adjustment deal but not sure. I need some advicefrom someone who has had a similar problem.

MY 89 shifts very quick in comfort mode, locking the t/c almost immediately. I usually keep it in power mode and see no difference in gas mileage. You could start by adjusting the throttle cable and see if that helps.

my 90 is doing the same thing. could this be from the mixing of what ever trans fluid was in there with some mercon?

Having the wrong fluid in there will cause problems. Time to do a flush.

thottle cable adjustment did nothing to the shifting only made it easier to downshift when more gas pedle is applied any other possibilities

Change your transmission filter.

Then, at your next oil change, change the tranny filter again.

Problem solved.

I don't think it's that simple of a problem karl. The transmission jerks to hard for it do be a fluid issue

Can anyone think of any other possibilites besides the tps and fluid/filter?

motor and tranny mounts. Possible TC lockup.

can anyone tell me exactly how to test the solenoids in the transmission with a voltmeter and what they should read in spec.

I also have a 89 4.0L with a NP 242 and AW4 141k miles. I was having a CPS connector issue and it wouldnt start so i unplugged and replugged it in. Jeep started right up. But ever since my 3-4 gear whether going up or down is not smooth like it used to be. When it up or down shifts the rpm rise, then its like it loses power and hiccups then the rev jump back up then come down smoothly. I tried searching and so far this is the only thread i found with a similar problem...any ideas anyone?

Forgot to mention that very other gear shifts fine.

Thanks,

Dan

My XJ does shift hard but going the other way, that is from 3 to 2 to 1. It does this so violently that sometimes I am afraid to step on the gas when I know it is at the point of down shifting. There is something about the TV cable but I am not sure how it works.
A tight TV cable make the shift hard or is it the other way?:dunno: I think my cable is adjusted tight, all the slack taken out when the gas pedal a all the way to the floor.
