View Full Version : The big debate, 33s and locked or 35s and open?

This is my DD 99 XJ and I have a used Detroit for my d30. I got it on the cheap and I have a chance to make $100 off it. Anyways my Jeep can fit and I have run 35s or 33s. I know for DD (stoping/wear and tear) 33s are better. Of course I'd love to get back to 35s, but now having the front locked I'd be VERY worried all the time. Its a stock hp d30 besides the steering and 4.56s.
So whats the best of both worlds? locked front with 33s or open and 35s? (don't let the rear axle be a deciding factor) The rear 8.25 is staying open cause a 9" or 8.8 is in the very near future.

33's and locked would be my choice

Locking it on 35's will probably yield a loud snap or two in the future, but I'd be more worried about stopping the Jeep on 35's if you still have stock brakes...

I figured you'd say that Randy :D
I'm already leaning towards that, just wanting to hear opinions. Kinda past the "look at my huge Jeep" phase and I definately think a front locker and 33s would get me further offroad.

I do, it really wasn't too bad. Its weird my 99s brakes seem much stronger than my old 97 or 00 XJs. Not saying there wasn't a difference though, plus these were MT/Rs that were more like 34s.
My next tires are MTZs.

locked on 33's.
Shoot, locked on 31's is better than 35's and open IMO!

For the trail - Hell yes locked and 33s, whats 1/2" of gc
For the mall - No run 35s and be open (don't for get the bushwackers and snorkle :gag: )

I ran 33's fully locked for a long time and it was a ton of fun and very capable.
My choice also.

Rigs that are locked on 33's/35's go places much easier than my rig with an open front and 38.5s do just about everytime I'm on the trail. Lock it up, keep the smaller tires.

33's are the biggest tires my rig is going to get, they just work so well and i am not going to have to perform any major axle swaps or complex suspension setups in the future, Im not saying that i don't want to do either of those (hell i wanna build a bells and whistles buggy someday) but with a short rig it keeps factory parts together if your smart and it makes me become a better driver, lock it up and follow the big rigs wherever you want to go

After spending the weekend in JV.. I've decided the 33's are too small, I need 35's! Minus the snorkel and Utah-Whackers.

hmmm, are you selling tires and gears? :D
33's and 4.56 are all I want. I don't really want that much but I like the gearing depth and I want to be larger than 30's on 4.10s.

When I build my new front 30, I'm thinking about 4.88's and 33's. Then move to 35's when I can get more lift.

I'd rather have the traction of lockers vs. the clearance of the 35's.

30's and 2.5" of lift open open IMO??? But seriously 33's all the way for a daily driver, they look just right to me.
