View Full Version : 5th annual TSF Thanksgiving run
mojojojo
September 8th, 2010, 13:07
It's that time of year again... Time to start planning our 5th annual Thanksgiving run at TSF !
What: Camping, wheelin, and all around good times !
Where: Tilimook State Forest (Browns Camp area)
When: November 26th thru the 28th.
Who: Everyone is invited ! Just come prepared and act responsibly !
Camping: Assuming Horse Camp is open we will shoot for camping there. if not Lyda will be the back-up plan. Horse camp has only fire pits and outhouses. Lyda has nothing !
As always, please come prepared. there may be snow, and i assume it will be quite cold. It is always wet this time of year, so pack accordingly. Tarps, rain gear, recovery gear, first aid, etc... As i said above there are no creature comforts at Horse Camp or Lyda ! bring yur own water. nearest bathroom to Lyda is 5 minutes to horsecamp (which also has no running water). front and rear tow points highly recommended if you want to be rescued from anything. LOTS OF FIREWOOD is a great idea !
The last 2 years I left right after dinner thursday night and hopefully will do the same this year to reserve a spot.
Info on past runs:

I will post up meeting times for folks that aren't camping as we get closer, but typically we pull out around 930-10am to hit the trails.
I'm posting this early so folks can plan ahead. The last few years we have had HUGE turn outs for this. Its a great time ! Don't let the turkey and stuffing sidetrack you... you can always visit granny at Christmas. :laugh3:

Where we are camping will not require an ATV permit. so worse case You/we could drive to the gas station first thing Friday morning and buy a permit:attom:

Maybe bribe one of the Oregon guys to pick one up beforehand. Unfortunately, they're only available in Oregon. I think all they would need is name, VIN#, address, year, make, and model.
Second option would be contacting the Oregon Department of Foresty, and seeing if there's a way to order online, I doubt it though.
Here's a link that list the businesses that sell them.

Hi Joe,
You can purchase ATV Permits over the phone through the Oregon Parks Information Center at 1-800-551-6949. Or you can purchase them through local vendors here in Oregon. Here is a link to our State ATV website: www.oregonohv.org (http://www.oregonohv.org/) . On the left side, click on "Permit Agents" and choose your location. Also, an ATV/OHV operating permit that is issued in another state shall be honored in the State of Oregon if the issusing state also honors an Oregon ATV operating permit. The ATV must have a resident state ATV/OHV operating permit or a State of Oregon ATV operating permit to operate the ATV on designated ATV areas. Listed below is a list of those states:
Alaska
California
Colorado
Idaho
Illinois
Indiana
Missouri
Montana
North Dakota
Pennsylvania
South Carolina
Utah
Vermont
Washington
Wisconsin
If you have any other questions please email or call us at 1-877-7SAFELY. Thank you and happy riding!

if we end up at lyda, there is plenty of room. if we end up at horse camp, there is not. it is a very small loop. However, you might be able to put it outside the entrance ? or... Lyda is only about a 5 minute run in the jeep.

It sounds like the majority are planning on camping during some part of the weekend. If the plan is to still stay at Horse Camp (?), then I think we should be able to fit everyone in. Horse Camp has a decent sized loop to it, so we'll probably end up taking the whole place over.

Easy directions incase the roads are nasty -
Take HWY 6 west towards Tillimook, Look for the signs for "Elk Creek Campground". Elk Creek is on the right side of the road just opposite of SouthFork Rd. It is just past mile post 28, turn left onto South fork Rd, follow south fork Rd past prison camp, approx 1 mile past prison camp the road forks. Stay to the left. DO NOT turn across the bridge! Follow the road approx .5 -1 mile. You will eventually pass by Mini-Ruicon. Just past there, the road will fork again. Stay to the left again. When you get to the top (approx 100ft) turn right down hill. This will put you on Powerline trail, but its a super easy section. When you get to the bottom of the hill Horse Camp is on your left. Come on in and say hi !
There are other ways to get there but some are off road, and some are super steep up hill.... not friendly when your loaded down and there is snow and ice on the ground.
http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/mojo2010PTII/Misc/HORSECAMP-MAP.jpg
Note: If for some reason Horse Camp is closed. We will be staying at Lyda Camp. This located just across the bridge mentioned in the directions above.
TORX
November 22nd, 2010, 12:49
I'm sure Mojo will post the way by using South fork Rd, so I'll give another option.
Here's what ODF has on their website:
Stagecoach Horse Camp is easily reached by turning south off of Highway 6 at milepost 33 onto Beaver Dam Road and following the signs for 5 miles into the campground. It is home to camping and day use staging for accessing the Historic Hiking Trail Loop. Please note, Stagecoach sits in the heart of the Browns Camp OHV Trail area.Basically after stopping for your Oregon ORV permit at the Gales Creek Shell (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=gales+creek+shell+and+grocery&fb=1&gl=us&hq=gales+creek+shell+and+grocery&hnear=Vancouver,+WA&view=map&cid=1398332640177275028&iwloc=A&ved=0CEcQpQY&sa=X&ei=1dTqTOnxI5OwtAOi08jmCQ) (ask for a map), continue up highway 6 for approximately 7 miles. When you get to the top of the pass there will be signs for Rogers Camp/Browns Camp. Turn left at the summit following the signs. Take a right at the Y, and continue on Beaver Dam Rd. The road will split two more times and you'll still want to stay to the right. After you go over a small bridge, stay on the main road for a few miles, and follow the signs to Horse Camp.
Also, another option could be unloading at Rogers Camp day use (take a left instead of a right when you make the turn off the highway). There's a big map there you can study. Then cruise to camp in the Jeep. I'm not sure how much snow will be on the ground, so rather than towing to camp blind it might be easier to use the Jeep instead to scout. Also if you make a wrong turn turning around may be a bit easier. Then one of us can run you back up to pick up the tow rig. It's an option to think about.
This is the only map I have right now, but you can kind of see the route you'll need to take. It's pretty straight forward.
http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t123/Torx_89/Misc/untitled.jpg
For those of us heading out on Thursday I vote we take Rutherford Rd over the top.
mojojojo
November 22nd, 2010, 12:55
I reccommend Rutherford Road as the absolute quickest route for everyone !
However, if there is any ice / snow on the road i would not try this alone. This road is VERY steep and curvy !
for those that want it, here is the link to ODFs OHV trail map
http://www.oregon.gov/ODF/tillamookstateforest/docs/TSF_08_OHVGuide.pdf
Like Dustin said, they are usually available at the gales creek station as well.

There's also a few turns you need to make that have no signs. Easy to get mixed up. I don't think I've used that route for a few years. Sounds like the perfect route for Thursday though. :D
Because of the conditions, I'd say follow the signs by using Beaver Dam Rd, or if you've been up there before go down and come up from South Fork.
If it's going to keep snowing this week (it will), a lot of the roads may not have tracks on them. If your towing a trailer the safest bet would be sticking to the main route following the signs.

If there's no snow at camp he should be fine as long as it is not short hair. If there is snow a tarp and blanket for them to get there feet off the snow at camp should be ok
