View Full Version : NAXJA contingency for Jeepspeed.

It finally got done. The BOD has now created a contingency program for the two remaining Jeepspeed races.
Sept. 11th and the October 15th and 16th races.
We will be posting $1000 for each event. At these races we will randomly draw three numbers from the entrants who are NAXJA members, awarding $500, $300 and $200 to those who are drawn ($200 for the first one drawn, 300 to the second etc etc.)
This is a test program to see what sort of return we can get from providing contingency money for Cherokee based events.
What we need now is volunteers. People to go to the races to sign up and register new members. We will provide as much as we can to the volunteers who participate.
Many details need to be worked out, but this is a big step for NAXJA and it is my hope that we can expand this program in years to come.
Who can help?
We would need you to be at the contingency meeting the day prior to the first race (Sept 10th.)
Let me know.

Goatman was telling me about this and I have to say this was a great idea. The random drawing is brilliant.
One time membership fee of 35'ish bucks, a decal and you get 6 chances of winning no less than $200
Great idea guys!
Wish I could help, but I cant afford to race the Sept. race and wont be able to make it out either. Put me in the drawing anyways...

You gotta' start the race Eric!
I am very happy with the boards approval of this program.
It should prove to be a turning point for us.

NAXJA cards to hand out are a huge plus. easy to carry and people can stick em in thier pocket and check the site out when they get home. Maybe a jeepspeed themed card? or a flyer maybe, 4x6 4 over 1? (color one side black on the back). I'll help with designing either if you guys need it. I also think it would be a good idea to get a big banner out there to hang on an eazy-up.
Thanks BOD! This is a great idea and I think it will promote NAXJA in a big way, there are quite a few people romping around the desert in XJs that have no idea this place exists. Lets change that!

Are we running a NAXJA Sticker on our rigs? What size, and are they going to be made available at contingency?
I can help out at the contingency booth after I get my Jeep through tech.
I also have a small stack of NAXJA business cards left, maybe 100 or so.

Stickers will be supplied. How big? That is still up in the air but somewhere around 5" x 14" for both sides of your car.

Money that could be used for land uses causes or even advertisement (which sounds like the idea here) is just going into members pockets. 3 events = $3000 to make that back 3000/35 =~86 members need to joint is that going to happen in 3 days of racing? i doubt it.

Also I would look into the legality of prize money being offered from a non profit to it's members. Everything Ive read says that it's not allowed.

I disagree, most the jpspeed rigs I have seen at various off road shows keep their stickers and draw a crowd. I have also found the jeep speed guys to be the friendliest and most talkative of all the racers at the expos.
I think it's a great way to get more traffic.

Spoken like someone who has NO idea about offroad racing. Have you seen the returns from offroad sponsorship? Have you ever been to Barstow and seen how many non naxja XJ's are floating around? Probably not. There's a lot of potential, and it's great way to get the name out there and our mission statement to help keep land open. Getting involved in educating people at Contingency is a HUGE step in the right direction, handing out flyers and trash bags etc to help keep the desert clean.

Take that back channel with the BOD then or in the members forum. This tech forum isn't the place for it.

It's called contingency sponsorship. You have to pay to advertise at these races. You're basically in turn paying to have your name on all these cars, and being mentioned in the winners circle.

Seriously, the $3000 doesn't have to equal members.....if we get more traffic on here from go fast guys, that means more potential advertisers and so on. The money all ends up at the same cause but getting your name out isn't free and there is a JS section for a reason. Please keep your comments constructive and keep the negative stuff to yourself. WaXJ_Skier: I don't mind hearing your opinion. The BOD made a decision, you don't think it's a good one. I can see your point of view: Why blow 3K on what amounts to advertising when you have no real way to measure response? Another downside is it's highly regional. No desert racing where there are no deserts. I doubt anyone east of Kansas has ever been to a Jeepspeed race. Easy enough to understand.
On the flip side, that 3K WILL put club advertising on the sides of a lot of race cars. ('Don't know how big the field is this year, but at one point it was over 90.) It will draw membership and manufacturer sponsors: how much i don't know. I think its a good idea. I'll admit my bias: I like desert racing, and I race part time. I'm just trying not to be mad because I won't qualify for the contingency(wrong class)

How about this: take your complaining to the members forum where it belongs and stop pissing and whining in the public section about member business. I realize you like to complain and think you can run the place better than the BOD, but you should know better than to post your comment in this thread. There, is that better? I don't see that as an issue I agree it's a great idea. but how does handing out cash prizes to existing members play into that?
The whole program is designed to get more members. There aren't that many Jeepspeed people that are members, so most will have to join to be able o participate. Also, like has been said, there are a ton of built XJ's at desert races even beyond the Jeepspeed class, cars chasing or spectating from other classes. It is an important market that NAXJA needs, so this is purely a marketing decision. We've been working on ideas for the best way, best bang for the buck, to market to the desert community, and this is what we came up with. It's trial and error at best, but this could be a good program. It's a one time deal, for two races, then we'll see.
Personally, and I already suggested this, I think the program can be self funded in the future, with Jeepspeed specific fundraisers. I think we can pull off a once a year NAXJA Jeepspeed BBQ, and I think we can sell NAXJA Jeepspeed t-shirts, and some stickers. Worth a shot.
Oh, and I think you are free to express your opinion, and ask questions. But there is a members forum to conduct club business.

Well it is 2 events. Would you prefer we give the money away to anyone in the race, or to just teams who support NAXJA? The projected involvement is around 30 teams. The hope is that not only the teams will join, but the support crews and spectators as well, this is where the big upside comes in. $35 for 3 chances to win your share of $1000 with approx odds of 1 in 10 to win something? Think about how many people buy lottery tickets with far worse odds of winning?
I think the program has a big upside, you just need to adjust your attitude slightly and you just might see this as well.

It should be noted that NAXJA's primary function is maintaining this site, second is land access (and we will always maintain that order.)
But we are looking to branch out and see what avenues we have to market and grow this organization.
Jeepspeed is the largest competitive organization based on the XJ platform, making it our logical choice for testing the waters for outside advertising for our site.
I'm not too concerned that the program needs to support itself right now.
Lets see what we get from this before we jump to any conclusions.
WaXJ dude has every right to question what the BOD does. Every member has that right.
I fully believe this is an opportunity that has we have let go for too long.
Its time to see what is to be seen.

It can be very hard for most people to wrap their mind around marketing. Some will get it and most will not.
Short term marketing wont be nearly as effective as a long/longer term comitment to the program.
I think the BOD get's it...

Advertisers pay for traffic. The more people that can be "delivered" to them, the more they pay to advertise and sponsor us. The more they pay to advertise here and sponsor us, the more we can do for land-use issues, and the better our raffles will be. I'm willing to see how this works out, and would love to see more Jeepspeed oriented members here. Their builds bring some great new ideas to XJ building. For example, our ROTM for August, Loose-Nuts, has exactly the idea I thought of but much better executed for a rear tire carrier, not on a bumper and retaining the hatch.

RDM Offroad is also a contingency sponsor for the Jeepspeed series. For those of you that are questioning the retun on investment for putting up prize money for racers that run your stickers, let me put your mind at ease.
We have been involved with Jeepspeed since our company was founded. Without the support of Jeepspeed, the race teams, and the huge following of wheelers that follow the series, we would not be where we are now.
Sure, it was questionable when we started the contingency program but you need to give in order to receive.
NAXJA is a natural fit for the Jeepspeed series. You won't be dissappointed.

Sorry for the delay in giving NAXJA the official thanks of Jeepspeed. We got the info posted on www.jeepspeed.com (http://www.jeepspeed.com) as soon as it was confirmed. Jeepspeed looks forward to working with NAXJA and will do all we can to promote your organization. Apart from race days we will be displaying your name at Off Road Expo and other functions we attend to promote Jeepspeed. Our other main sponsors realize that the Jeepspeed brand name and image carries a message to the millions of weekend warriors that use Jeepspeed products on their rigs eg. wheels, tires, suspension, engines, shocks, etc., so hopefully a lot of new XJ owners will become aware of NAXJA for the first time. We're talking about developing a program to cover any NAXJA members that compete in any competition, but this pilot program is just for Jeepspeed. We feel it's a priority to develop a better relationship with Jeespeed and the desert community, and it's way overdue. As we see how it works we can figure out how to expand it.
Marketing is tough, but giving some support to NAXJA members who compete is a good way to get the word out in a credible way. NAXJA is not just another XJ forum, it is THE PLACE to be for all things XJ/MJ, and anyone should be proud to be a member.

I personally think this is a great idea to do this. I am part of a Score int. class 1 race car and im telling you from experience these venders that do contingency defiantly get there name out there. if it wasn't for them the racers pay day would be less. Hell at the last Baja 1000 and 500 Dusty times gave $1,000 to the last place finisher and guess who the crowd talked about the most, all because it was a crazy amount of money for last. The one rule is to qualify for the cash you have to run the name on the car. easy as that and all the people see that. GREAT step forward and forget that ass in the first couple of pages, he has no clue. I know i am new here but i would be there for you guys if i was not going to be at the Primm 300 this weekend. I will help in the future.

The only concern I have is about the sticker size. 5x14 is a rather large sticker. Some of us have a lot of smaller sponsors that are giving a lot throughout the season to have their name on our car, leaving little space left for contingency stickers. With our TJ, I know we don't have as much real estate for signage as the XJs do, but we wouldn't be able to fit a sticker that size, especially without it dwarfing a lot of our real sponsors that we've worked really hard to get and keep.
I do think this is an awesome program, and will benefit NAXJA, as well as the racing community.

Actual sticker size is 3.75"x 10".
And who cares what a TJ guy thinks anyway?

We are already running into a problem not having a dedicated crew to do registration this Friday.
I'm hoping that Brendan can help out, but if not, we need to drop this into the lap of Jeepspeed. Not what we really wanted to do, but it was an option.

Big thanks to the NAXJA guys who came out to the race. It went off great. All Jeepspeed teams were appreciative. We had a great show in Contingency Row with one big booth for Jeepspeed, NAXJA, T&J Performance Raceline Wheels, General Tire and RDM OffRoad. If we can do this at a difficult location just wait till you come to Parker AzOct 15/16/17 and Feb 2011?.....Who were the NAXJA winners? Thanks again.

:twak:
Because you have not given Woddy the information! Clive registered at the event and should be red along with five other new NAXJA / Jeepspeed members.
The winners of the contingency were:
$500 - 3701 T&J Performance (he'll need it because they broke their rear axle housing on the first lap
$300 - 1706 Loose Nuts Enterprise
$200 - 1771 [new member] his jeep broke as well.
I will post the winners over on the Jeepspeed forum as well.

We had no booth, I pretty much hung out at the Jeepspeed booth. Next time we need our own table and easy up. I was pretty much going up to each team jeep as they approached Tech, and gave my NAXJA speel.
More volunteers would have been great, I missed at least three teams, and got only one definate no for the contingency that cost them $35 to run our sticker. With the worst case odds of 3 in 15 (1 in 5 chance of winning something), actually that gets better if the run next race as well, $35 is a no brainer!

Congrats to the winners, and thanks for taking the initiative Brendan. Do we (by WE I mean the socal chapter) have a big NAXJA banner kicking around somewhere? If not I can prep files to have one made up, I also think A poster sized info board or two would be great to have up at a booth.
I can produce, print, and mount the posters myself for less than 1/4 the cost of what kinkos or similar charges to print and mount for you - for the past 2 years Ive been mounting 3 posters a week so I learned real quick how to do it to save money, lol. Keep me in the loop

We have a couple floating around in the SoCal chapter. I have one and Josh has one.
I'd like to get a few of those giant fake checks for the next race. Some posters would be great too. We have funds available to us to make the next race show our best efforts.
Let me know what you got.

FordGuy
September 13th, 2010, 12:48
Looks like Jeepspeed will be doing the BITD BlueWater Desert Challenge in Oct. This is going to be a great race, and its is two days and you must race both days to place. All laps will go main pit making it great for teams and family's

September 13th, 2010, 13:31
Also BITD is a closed course, if you are out on the course you must be in a pit, and you are there until the race is over.

I think we got 6th. Flat tire in the first 10 miles, then a broken rear control arm bolt on lap two...probably around an hour of down time, I'm guessing. Sucks, but that's racin.'

The do have designated spectator areas in some pretty good spots if you just want to watch, and there won't be any remote pits at this race that I'm aware of. They are 30 mile laps, and we get to do a whopping two laps a day.

Yea two laps for the some guys, three for others, but there will be no screwing around! It will be a drag race from the green flag. There will be a ton of people wadding it up from the get go. Huge deep giant sand whoops.

...,There will be a ton of people wadding it up from the get go. Huge deep giant sand whoops.Thirty miles,... Just got curious and dug out my pit book map from the -425.
I'm gonn'a guess they're going to start at the main pit, and run out the course to between mile-7 and 10, pick up the return leg around m121-125, and run the python when they get back. 'Probably not the roughest part of the course, but a lot of places through there to run short of talent.
Should be a great race for the spectators.
(yeah, I remember/hate those "Huge deep giant sand whoops" :rof: )

FYI...we have elected to make OCT 16/17 Parker, Az our last weekend of the year . Although Best in the Desert are combining times of both days for their results Jeepspeed is treating the as two separate events. Two sets of points but prize money half purse each day. This can really shake up the year end points. Looking forward to seeing you all at Parker.
