View Full Version : Something to think about...again.

So this weekend I made a decision that I will not be running again for any position on the BOD next year. I have had a lot of fun doing it in years past and I've tried to stay active and help the BOD guys the last two years even when I wasn't on the board (much to the disapointment of a few BOD members)

Anyway here is the thing. If we do not have anyone to run for the three BOD positions, the IC chapter will be dissolved. The by-laws state that there has to be a three person BOD in order for the chapter to stay active.

I know I speak for others who have put a lot of hard work into keeping this chapter active when I say that we do not want to see this happen. Last year I ran again because I knew that no one else was interested. I realize now that this isn't the way to run this chapter. We need someone in all three BOD seats who really care about the future of the chapter, the events, the M&G's and everything else.

So put some thought into this. I know a bunch of you who would make great BOD members. I also know most of you are scared of the time commitments. The thing is you can put as little or as much time into it as you want.

I am giving up my position at the end of this year as well. Three years in a row, remodeling a house and two kids later I am ready for a break. i agree with Ryan that there are a lot of qualified people (big jeeps and cool accessories are not needed as a qualification) Like Ryan said you can choose how much time to put in, but we need some people to take over and keep this chapter going.

I would volunteer but I have no idea how to run a chapter. About the only thing I can think of that I know how to do would be to get some M&G goin...

How about you more experienced guys?

I dont post much but ill do what it takes to keep this place from being dissolved.

Bod members have to be in Red for a year to qualify. Chris let's get your name in red to get some able bodies for later down the road.

So how much time would you guys say a person needs to spend per month if picked for one of these positions? Add in your meetings (which is once per month I think?) And is there a run every month.. or? Just an estimated guess, ball park figure.

The only thing I have noticed is a lot of the guys on here are into the expeditions and exploring type stuff, I'm not really into that. i'd rather head out to little Moab, or Constrictor for the day and beat around. Not saying I would never do the exploring thing, i just don't see myself doing a whole lot of it.

The time a guy puts into it is pretty subjective. Obviously, the more time you can spare, the smoother rungs will run and the happier the chapter members will be.

I drive truck for a living and in the winter months I'm home maybe a day a week. After taking care of my family it only leaves a short amount of time to devote to running the chapter. Over the last two years Steve has completely remodeled his house (himself) and had a baby yet he found time to keep it running as President last year and treasurer this year.

As far as the expedition type thing... We tried to take a reading on who makes up this chapter. Honestly we are a pretty diverse group, ranging from guys who run completely stock rigs, guys like me who prefer milder but long distance runs to guys who only want to run the hard core stuff.

We chose to do stuff right in the middle. The best and also the worst part about being in charge is that it is ultimately up to you what kind of run you want to put on. It's been my experience that if you try and ask what the chapter wants to do, you will get 50 people giving you at least 75 ideas and you will be back to square one.

Thanks for the input. I was just curious. I hit my year as red in October and would consider it. I haven't really been active this year as my rig has been down since last October, but is running as of this week.

I think the chapter was more successful when we did more of the day trips to Little Moab, Snakes, West Desert, AFK, Farmington....... I know I was more active then. Not everybody has the time or even the desire to do the multi-day overland trip thing. So if you would like to give it a try, you can run the chapter how you and the other BOD members want.

The thing is if the chapter is run by guys that like the overland thing it will have more of an overland feel. If it is run by guys that like the little Moab style runs than that is the feel you will get. One thing that I have learned is that you will never make everyone happy. Everyone will always have ideas on bow to make things better and that is great. But now is when people can step up and change the things they don't like. You have to find a way to get new members coming in and old members to stick around. What matters is that you do your best and feel good that you at least did it.

I would hate to see the chapter dissolved but it is time for me to focus more on my family. Like Ryan said I did a complete remodel on my house inside and out. Added a garage built my own kitchen cabinets and have had two kids join my family in the last three years that I have been in the BOD. Yes it takes time but if you have tome to get on here and post you have time to be a part of the BOD. You can have monthly events quaterly events or whatever the BOD decides they wAnt to do. Come up with an event like the Geostash and get prizes to give away to raise money for things like stickers banners tshirts coats or whatever you want to do and land use causes.

Some people like the geostash and some people hate it. It will be like that for anything that is done. But from a fundraiser view the geostash has been the biggest money maker And the event with the best giveaways over the past five years. So finding a way to make this chapter a success is what is really needed.

I pushed hard at the beginning of the year for people to throw together small day runs. No one was interested.

In May we tried to get a Price run going along with the multi day run through the Swell for the people who only had a day or so to go, again it was pretty much cancelled due to lack of interest.

Speaking of multi day runs, we have only had two this year, both had a decent turn out.

In years past we have done a spring trip to Moab. It was always popular and probably would be now. The biggest reason we didn't do it the last few years is the crappy economy, peoples reluctance to pay high gas prices and the fact that there was always Fall Fling to attend in October. I think now that the national BOD has put fall fling on the back burner and is only really going to push it every five years or now might be a great reason to start doing our spring run again.

The point I'm trying to make is you never know what will bring members out. Four years ago our spring Moab trip rivaled Fall Fling for attendance yet last year there was only a dozen or so rigs.

I've seen the same thing with the local runs. One time you will have 20 or so show up and the next time you might have two.

I may not post very often i kind of like just to see what people are doing. I think there is a good mix of people here. The lack of interest in the day runs may still be due to economical times. I think we should still try to have them and I would also like to see this chapter continue. From what I can tell in my short time here you guys have done a good job and have tried hard to get people out to have some fun.

someone just needs to take the spot, even if they dont have time to do anything, there are people here that will set it up. the spot just needs to be filled. It is not that hard to do.

I think jmaxj needs to jump in as President. I would be willing to take one of the positions, I hit my year as red Oct. 18th.

I honestly don't care who runs but one thing I would like to see this year is at least six of you run.

We haven't had a two way election in about six years. It's about time we do.

Unfortunatly, (and I don't mean anything negative) It seems that it almost needs to be a Wasatch front BOD. Even with the net, face to face time is probably necessary, most members are there, most runs originate from there, most suppliers are there, etc, etc.

I know how far removed from Provo/SLC/Ogden I feel so I can imagine how the guys in ID,WY, NM & MT feel. It's really difficult for any of us to participate in day runs let alone governing the chapter. I'm all for keeping it going but I don't know if would really make a difference to a lot of us seeing we are so wide spread.

Maybe I'm totally wrong and it can be done from afar. If that is so, then I could be interested in participating. Something needs to be done to reach out to the non-Wasatch front membership.

As far as the day to day running of the chapter I think it could be handled from a distance.

Dave, Steve and I have been spoiled because we all live within 5 miles of each other but I think you could make it work although it probably wouldn't be ideal.

Most of the actual BOD stuff takes place via phone call anyway.

I dig the chapter info, would throw my hat in the ring, but you all are mostly distant from me.

Not that that is a big deal, having ran NAXJA as a whole, but I need to be involved on a local level... and need to learn more about my new area first.

I hope some people do step up and run, be great to see multiple choices.

I know in the red river chapter where i just moved from, we were thinking of having like area reps because that chapter is huge. So some one from each state (or region) that could round up events and get people close to them to wheel and wrench. I know what its like traveling 6 hours to wheel with the chapter, ya its alot of fun, but difficult for most of us. especially with moving to idaho i know it will be like being in the part of texas i was in, and having to travel to club events and being a small voice. i do hope to see the club get busier and get to know yall better.
