ok so im kicckin myself in the balls cause i keep lookin at pics of my old jeep and when i sold it it wasnt what i wanted to do so i sold it and just stuck with my DD(4" with 31's all stock) now i wanna go the other route(full widths 7-8" and 35's) my old jeep had d44's from a j10. i wanna put full widths under my dd and lift more and go with 35's. heres what i plan(prolly take a whole year to finish but i think it will be worth it in the end)
i got the xj sport(4.0L, AW4, NP231)
full widths with 4.88's and maybe a rear lock-right.
35's prolly only 12.50x15
maybe long arm front
heres the hard part....does anyone within a couple hour drive have any full width axles they wanna sell for not an arm and a leg(i dont wanna pay 300 per axle)
what they gotta be:
front: high pinion, driver side drop
rear: i dont care what it is but i wanna be able to put disc brakes on it, so if a conversion hasent been figured out yet then i cant use it.
both must be same lug(preferably no more than 6 lug)
A: will this be ok with bein a dd?
B: does this type of set up pass inspection?
c: am i goin way to far with my jeep for someone that uses the jeep as a dd but also the main source of transportation for my girlfriend and her 2 kids?
basically can i get some opinions on this set up/idea?

honestly if it is goin to remain DD the best option would be to alter as little as possible, mild lift 33's lock it F&R and armor it well, use it as a crawler and be mindful of that fact when you wheel it, i drive my jeep around 100 miles a day (my gf lives about 40 minutes from me) and anyone out there who has wheeled with me knows that im not afraid to try stuff build it simple stout and reliable and your parts will hold up and you will make it to work monday morning, if you want specs on my setup pm me and ill write out the list

If you can find a set front and rear geared the same and pay 300.00 a piece for them good luck. I paid 225.00 thats with tax, for my rear. Then gears, locker rear disc brakes as you mentioned I was at 1500.00
I paid 1500.00 for my front axle had a detroit 5.13's warn premium hubs chromo axles inner and outer, with ctm's. also spare axles hubs and ctm. That was a great deal.
But it depends on what you want. To push bigger axles and tires you will have to regear it. You will want to lock it, or what is the point in swapping in full widths?
If I was you, and wanting to keep a daily driver.
I would do chromo's all around. Good locker in the front, and a powertrax in the rear. I would trim the fenders and add TJ flares, Less lift needed. And run no bigger than 35's. You can truss the front and rear axles to beef them up a little. However you may want to go hydro assist. I would also plate the unibody. If you like the wide look, get some spacers.
I thought of everything before doing my ride. But it is not a DD. You still want this thing to be road worthy and safe for the other riding in it at high speeds.

that's about what I got planned for mine, but I'm only going to run 33 or 32 inch tires. I want itto be tough enough for what I'd try but still good for commuting.

i like the appeal of full widths and i figure if i could find some old chevy axles with stock 4.56's then i could just yank them outta a yard and throw a locker in the rear and be good for 33's, 35's is pushin it but i figure 35's with 4.56's is bout the same out come as me runnin 31's with stock 3.55's! i already got tj flares up front so im good there but runnin 35's with stock width axles to me looks a little goofy cause bein so tall and skinny! thus the reasoning for full widths. so basically as a dd im better to just lock the stocks and throw 33's and call it a day!?

Opinions being sought, and provided, so hold on....
running a DD on full widths is asking for a whole lot of trouble from the law here in VA. IF you pass inspection you will be targetted any time you get near a town with more than 1000 people in it, sad fact of life.
Trying to fit Chevy axles is almost a nonstarter as most are passenger side drop and the XJ is driver side. And getting any that doesn't require tons of work/parts axle for $300 each is going to be impossible. Breaks, bearings, wheel studs, seals, gears, they all ad up to more than that already...
You really need to decide what you want to do with that thing. One day you're selling it, another you're selling parts, the next you're looking for hand out parts, and still another you want to run full widths so you can beat it and DD it? Which is it going to be, 'cause it is VERY difficult to have both a reliable DD and a full width trail monster, without spending either gobs of money or time making it happen.
Why do you want to go full widths? Is there some serious reason for doing this that would benefit you in the places you offroad, or does it just sound like a neat thing to do? Frankly unless you've discovered some really well kept secret somewhere in VA, I think that standard width will suit pretty much any public land you could have access to for wheeling. I wheel my stuff hard in the rocks of Crozet, which makes pretty much every piece of public trail I've been on in VA look like a 4 lane highway, and I'm only running D30/D44 locked on 33's and a 3.5 RE with a 1.5 shackle. I've seriously trimmed, but since I've gotten hooked on Crozet I have taken the XJ off the road so I don't have to worry about limping some wounded vehicle home after a day of fun.
I'm not trying to bust your b*lls, I'm trying to help you keep from getting yourself into a lot more headaches than you can really handle. You really need to sit down and think about what you are going to use the vehicle for, beyond the next week, and make sensible mods to meet that goal.
Can you run a DD with 33's and still wheel it? Yes, if you wheel with care and have ample time, ability, and parts to make sure that what happens on the weekend doesn't result in loss of reliability and, most importantly, safety for the rest of the week.
Good luck with your search and whatever you decide.

you make alot of good points! i wanna start over on a whole nother jeep but the fact is i still owe 5600 bucks on this jeep thats only book value at like 3000. so unless i can sell it for 3500 the bank wont release my title so im kinda screwed in sellin it(how ever a soon repo is in my future cause i aint paid a bill on it since september). i love the look and stance an xj has on full widths, plus havin axles like that leave it ready for more lift and 38's one day! i sold the bumper, wheels and tires to pay a payment and then the next day i quit my job so i bought gas, smokes and food with the money. so i have all kinds of shit i wanna do with this thing. but it seems every idea i have for it is either to outrageouse for a DD or to tough for the type of wheelin i do. i think of things i think would be cheap projects(such as junk yard axles) but then i find out it cost an arm and a leg, which we all know im broke as hell! i think my best bet is to total the damn thing and just stick with ridin my bmx around town(saves gas, good exersise, cheap to fix when broken, and ridin it around means i wont have to make time to sesion anymore....i can just hit some rails on the way to work) but meanwhile lets turn this into another thread/poll thingy....
all in favor of totaling it type A
all in favor of leavin it the way it iss and dealin with the POS type B
all in favor of not caring type C
thank you that is all!

Why not just pay for it before you have no jeep?

November 20th, 2006, 11:51
i dont have money for the payment cause i hacve no job. thats one reason i been wanting to sell it so that it dont get repod and screw my credit! but i was gonna ask my parents for a set of axles for christmas, but after readin some opinions i think i might just ask for a rear lock right and some rear disc brakes! or i could alway just ask them to catch up my payments!

I don't get it. You want to sell it, but get a set of axles for it a month and a half from now? So when christmas rolls around you will have a nice set of axles for your BMX?
You are soooooooo nominated buddy :D

ok it goes like this, if someone wanted to buy the jeep SOLD! but until its sold im just gonna enjoy it and keep on modifying! but i've steered away fromthe full widths! i have a set of 33's i think imma just throw on there for the hell of it and just suck as much gas and have as little power as possible but i figure if nothin else it'll look good!

man put it on e-bay. Also call the place where you have it financed. If you know what bad credit can do to you then you would not mess it up. You got any pics of the Jeep?

yeah i got a crap load of pics but puttin it on ebay is more trouble than its worth to me. i wanna keep the jeep cause i love wheelin and i love xj's plus i love havin a 4x4 for winter but i just cant afford it, i got a letter from the bank last thursday tellin me im over 45 days late on my payment and my intrest rate is 14.4%. my mom floated me 300 to pay on it back in august and it dropped the total down to 5400 and somethin in october i went and paid 100 on it which paid half of september and that dropped the total down to 5604! so that intrest is killin me out of the hundred i paid i only paid an actual 8 dollars on the loan...the rest paid part of the intrest! and i owe 100 for the rest of sept, another 197.88 for october and november is due on the 27th! im kinda screwed on my jeep, it either gets repod and they sell it which leaves me to pay the rest(they prolly wont get but 1500 for it) or i can sell it asap for no less than 3000(they wont release the title unless i cover that much) and i would have to sell it for 3500 just to have 500 to get another ride! i had thought bought totaling it but with a book that prolly aint 3000 it wouldn't help my situation enough for me to roll it! im runnin out of ideas to keep my jeep other than i stay with my girlfriend in another town than the adress the bank has so them repoin it would be hard cause they wont be able to find it and im hopin that gives me time to get a job and make money to pay the past due...then this process repeats a few months later like always! i wish someone wanted to buy it but theres scratches and dents on it and noone wants that!

If you want to keep it so badly I have an coupe of ideas.....
Get a job.
Make the payments.
Modify it AFTER it's paid for.
Oh, and don't total it. At this point you have postings on the internet indicating your intent to do so, which would land you in civil court for insurance fraud, or even worse, prison.
Now I give up.
Good luck.

never mind forget what I said did not read the rest of the thread before posting
yeah pay your bills or sell it but in case you win the lotto in the next few days you can adhere to my post

X2 I drive mine 2 hr hours to tellico and wheel it hard and drive it home @ 65mph
all on 33s 5 inchs locked and I carry a few spare parts
there is not to many folks that will run slickrock and ledge above it without putting it on a trailer for the ride home
I like watching folks run stuff n 33s that make the guys on 37s and 9s use the same amount of the heavy pedal

Tell me why you're talking about full width axles and 35" tires? I second the nomination....
