First time I've driven this Jeep in 3 years, she is finally moving under her own power. Few more things till she's ready for the street

'Looking good! That's going to be a fun toy out in the open desert.
Not to be a buz-kill, but what happened to the front glass? Didn't you have those installed before the tear-down?
Also,(assuming you haven't noticed/thought about it yet) if you're going to run the shock reservoirs behind the tire, you might want to put an aluminum shield in front/below then to keep flying mud/sand/rocks out of them.

Need to get grills on those speakers! Pretty as those are, they're in the perfect place to kick on the way out the door. Looking nice,...

OK Thanks... how did you cut the aluminum for the door panels???
XJRunner
August 15th, 2010, 17:02
i did those when I was 15. (19 now) just traced the stock ones on flat aluminum and uses hand shears.

Just a thought, have you thought about continuing the wood grain and reproducing the colour over the fenders, it could give a really neat nostalgic look. Oh and I'm envious of your rig
XJRunner
August 15th, 2010, 21:13
i plan to do that once I get front glass. I need to find the factory color so I can reshoot it and put the wood grain on. Im still brainstorming on how to mold the molding around the glass

I'd recommend having a sticker made to use in place of the stock wood paneling. Try Signpros in OC. They can laser print on vinyl and probably make a good reproduction that will fit better than the old panel.

its already a vinyl stocker. and JCWhitney sells it. but theres aluminum molding at the top and bottom of the "wood" that i need to bend around the fiberglass

gonna need lot's of luck with that project. You'll be lucky if it's aluminum. Most side trim is thin stainless steel, and it doesn't like to bend cleanly. What really sucks is going to be finding long enough peices to go around the flares. Looks like the front door sections should be long enough to fab rear doors out of, but rear fenders are going to be tough. Any idea if they made that trim for a 2-door or a Comanche?

no clue. I was thinkin about going to the junkyard or getting some generic molding from jcwhitney

August 16th, 2010, 21:23
dont do stickers, they will just fade in the sun get some very thin sheets of wood like the kind you use to wrap a round object. Than stain it, seal it, bolt it. its most likely easier said than done
XJRunner
August 16th, 2010, 21:24
yeah and it is a wood sticker now. its from 87 and only one section is faded
