identifying axles

Im sure this has been covered but I cant find anything on my search.

Does anyone have any images of axles? I want to know how to ID an axle and I know nothing about them.

What does a 30, and 44 look like. How would I be able to tell the difference in them if i were at a junk yard?

Any info would be great and please don't laugh to hard at me.
