We'll if your not here you need to be......
So far so good.
Its been a little cold at night so dress warm.
Kangaroo rats all over the place, one started eating a little fruit I sat down while working on my junk and I snatched him up. Cute little guy.
Hwy 20 was run all day thursday. 15 rigs. 1 flopped, 2 broken alloy d44 shafts, one window busted out. Fun stuff.
Me n bryan (xj ranger) ran claw hammer today, good stuff. I destroyed a rear driveshaft, good thing I've got a spare at camp.
Now I'm hoping for a night run!
Ill be posting everytime we do a run cause I only get reception by the second lakebed/sand dune.

Hey Dump,
You beat me to it..
Yep.. IT WAS/IS COOL.. I arrived Wed night and got back around 8pm tonight..
Matt flipped his XJ.. I don't know his screen name though.. We were just at his rig, then walked away, then... no more than 30 secs later.. crash, thump, and crash. He's ok, just hurt his shoulder a bit..
Highway 20 was... hmmmm KICK ASS!!!!
Just remember to BRING SPARES if you are going to run anything except the "easy" run..
I'll be back up there Sat night, hopefully before the raffle..
See You Up There...

Matt, aka, Scrappy? young guy, like 22, in a blue mostly tube XJ?
that's funny :D
was Richard spotting? :laugh3:
Monkey55
November 18th, 2006, 06:55
It wasn't Scrappy..
This Matt has a silver '00 or '01 XJ and he's from Arizona..
Actually, no one was spotting him.. a few of us scratched our heads and wondered how ended up that way..
He flopped sideways, on the driver side, all the way on the roof, then rolled back on the driver side. :rof:

My son and I had a great time but be sure to bust my balls for not running the rest of LBJ, I deserve it. My intentions were to run the easy trail as part of a scouting mission for a future run out there but I ended up chosing the "Easy Moderate", increasing to moderate-moderate, increasing to insane run. Anyhow, it was cool and I appreciate the spotting help and tug when I slipped and got stuck. At least now I can say I ran a Hammer trail even if it was only Tack Hammer, and I even have a dent in my door to prove it! LOL!
If you have never been, the area out there is beautiul and there are cool areas all over the place to see and wheel, including all the famous very tough trails which I look forward to seeing in the future. Now I can really see why a lot of XJ's slowly evolve into tube buggies.
Ryans Home brew was great and my son loved the home brew cherry vanilla soda. The Raffle was great with a lot of goodies from a lot of great donors including that, who was it?, racingoil.com? raceoil.com? ummm....oh yeah, HotRodOil.com, yeah thats the one! Anyone that was at the event and is interested in a quote for The Best synthetic lubes, PLMK and I will hook you up with 10% over my cost. Thanks for a great time and I look forward to the next So-Cal event! John

tisk tisk, yer advertising in a non vendor forum. :D
I had a blast running TackHammer and Lower Big Johnson. I think I had the smallest tires out of the whole crew. Glad I replaced by factory front bumper with the protofab...it saved my front clip. Bent the snot out of my JCR 1 ton tierod...and my rusty's trackbar end looks like a pretzel.

Yeah, if I am I apologize, and if needed, mods please edit, etc. I figured mentioning the offer because I donated to the raffle and didn't get a chance to address the crowd with the offer last night. I hope to be able to donate to other events in the future, just not enough yet to meet the normal vendor advertising requirements.

I had a blast even if I was STUCK to running the easy trails. We had a roll over (Toyota) and got to rename the WJ (Dragin Wagon) which clanked and drug on everything. Ended up picking the wrong line and had to get a tug. All in all it was a great time.

Awesome event again. Just got finished unpacking.
A big thanks to Richard, Ron, all the vendors and "others" who donated, and to everyone else who helped with setup, cooking, trail guiding, etc.
I ran the Tack and LBJ and had a blast, no broken axles (guess I'll try harder?)
Pictures will follow.

I was pretty psyched at the raffle when the guy who won the Almonds is ALLERGIC to almonds!! that's a great first-time JV run story.....can't say he didn't win anything.
I had an awesome time and didn't even get to take my rig on the runs. My brother and I just drove to the trailhead and watched the crazies do the crazy stuff. Learned a lot, had a great time. Hope I'll be locked up and can enjoy some runs next year. Thanks y'all.

had a great time as usual. thanks to avery for leading sledge and the help i got from scrappy too. i will post up "saturday sledge hammer" as soon as i get the pictures sorted. my camera sure took some blurry shots. i hope it was just in the wrong mode. anyway. other thatn almost losing my crossmember/atlas when 3 bolts fell out just past the sldge mail box, i only bent a tre and probly my drag link. suprisingly just a few scratches no new dents from the trail. thanks also to richard and ron for organizing the event. hopefully we got a new record for monies rasied for the friends of the panimant.

Guys, had a great time. Sustained minimal damage, crushed passanger side rocker panel, and sprung the rear pasanger side leaf spring. We met alot of new people and made many more great friends. Thanks to shelbyluv and his family for the hospitality (even though the dragon wagon had to be winched off the beer can) lol, and dzraces for the insight on getting my rig ready to go. We had a blast. Now the list of mods and upgrades need to be purchased and installed for the next trip.
Thanks everyone for a great time!!!!

well I have to say it was much easier on my junk then I thought, but then again, I only ran Claw, but it was three times. Two at night and one in the day.
First run ever for me in JV in my own rig was fri night and followed a few others up Claw. I anticipated bigger bolders, but glad there was only what was there.
Then Sat afternoon me and Ben figured F'it follow others up wrecking ball. Well after waiting at the enterance for a few and watching what was happening to the other rigs at just the begining we were a bit questionable as well as his wife telling us lets pick another. Then there was a group of Very well built CJ's and a scout and a YJ all on 37's up to 40's and all on 60 or 9's it looked. Well they were just watching close to us and we heard them back down and say they were going to run claw, me and ben figured lets see about following them. That was a experience watching the Much bigger rigs need a winch about 4-6 times and taking freakin forever for 4 to go though.
all the while no real damage to my rig except a Large full door crease on the pass front.
Then my buddy in his well equip. TJ showed up sat at around 3. He has never been to JV at all. We didnt want to kill em on his first run there so sat night after raffle we took him back up Claw with ben and some other from here (bad with names). Well we f'ed the TJ up really.. He kept needing the winch (4 times) I think due to wheelbase, as it is very similer in drivetrain as all the other rigs he was with and following same lines.
In any case half way up he got it kinda pined and at one point it Banged good and he let it down and tryed again and Bang. Well after picking another line all was good. We finished up with both his rear fender flares breoken off about a foot up.
On the way out I was trailered out and the TJ drove with a smaller 4'x4' trailer. At yucca valley (first turn after hitting the road) it was found that the rear Electrac locker in the D44 in the TJ was not happy. After trail repair time in the carrows parking lot, we found that the tracloc inners (the electrac is basically a tracloc with a elect actuator that locks) well the gears must have sheared some. Metal everywhere in the diff.
I pilled mine off and we pulled the TJ on the trailer and I towed his little trailer being my XJ all the way home to yl..
Great time for sure. Have to Say that Ben is fully a great Tard to hang with. Not to mention his wife is one hell of a trooper and good people also. And the Dog, well thier dog is a suicidal bad ass......

after re-attaching my crossmember, thanks ron adkins for the bolt, everything behaved normaly. sledge hammer was a blast. though i did bend a tre and probly the drag link. the big daddy offraod tie rod seems perfectly straight still.... won't know untill i get it off there to see if it bent too. thanks again to all who made this trip happen! great wheeling with the group, even if there was an over abundance of non-xj's with us. at least they was all jeeps!!

Thanks to everyone who came out, and to all those who led trails, cooked, donated to the raffle, and bought raffle tickets. We know how to do it in SoCal, don't we. :D
I posted up a report in the Non-tech forum so everyone can read about the good time we had. I didn't use my camera this weekend, so please post up some pics and comments over there.
BTW, Cliff and I finished Resolution on Sunday, but not without trouble. I busted the straps on the front u-joint close to the bottom (that front suspension has to go), then further up broke the track bar. After thinking we were totally screwed and would have to walk back to camp to figure out a fix, I found a tie down strap in my bag. We used the strap to hold the axle in one direction and the winch line to hold it in the other direction and I drove out slowly. The only really dicey part was when Cliff had to drive around me in the tight section before a big waterfall so he could turn around and winch me up, since my winch was being used to hold the axle. He drove up the side of the wall on one side and over my tires on the other side, leaving a crease in his body from my cage.......tight!! But, we made it and it was definitely an interesting run.

I had a good time and laughed my ass off on more than a few instances
The easy run took a harder detour after lunch that was much apreciated. I met some new people, hung with some old, and drank a few really good beers (thanks Rawbrown) I enjoyed helping Erik learn more about wheeling his heep and he made me look good at every obsticle :) next trip Ill have my YJ and I hope to get into some of the fun stuff.....

well i said id post more when i was out there but i lied.......
its hard to be a web wheeler when there is actual wheeling to do.
i had a BLAST!
met some amazing people and had some amazing times.
ROBERTK who you calling tard.....IIRC youve been quotes in the trardwars06 thread :D :D :D :D jk man! On a serious tip, roberts an awesome guy and a blast to hang out with and even though he destroyed my tailights, won metal tailight boxes, and caused my whole electrical system to take a crap, we still love him :D
he did bring along some good trail help, i mean for a bronco guy.
i ran clawhammer.......too many times to count, and now i can run it blind folded but it was fun. I ate a rear driveshaft after i tried to hump a rock the size of my jeep (pics to follow.)
Sunday we ran aftershock, which was a great time. no breakage except for opies bumper welds and a few lights.
oh ya and i think the new trail spare item to carry is a battery tray. what a major PITA to deal with.
oh and Bo, shelybyluv RULES! as usual he saved the day on a number of occasions and was there to offer help whenever possible. If you can, get a chance to know this guy he would give you the shirt off his back, even though it was marine corps issue.......:D :D :D :D
To all the people i met and talked with, you guys were awesome! i met so many people id be afraid to start naming them off cause i wouldnt want to leave one out.

Well you sure it wasnt the multiple hits to the side / rockers from the rear bunper/anchor or the heavy push from the side, that did it? I mean all I did was brace for when you throttled it to come back and ram me. Or thats how I recall it happened..

I looked at it yesterday. The roof is the major damage, fender is bolt on and so is door. He had a Yakima rack which pushed in the roof above the doorframe. :(

SoCal folks,
Wonderful event. Enjoyed placing faces to names, meeting new folks and renewing friendships with others.
I had a great time and learned a few things about how unprepared my XJ is for SoCal terrain, picked up a few more ideas on how to improve it and have actually taken steps to get it built.
The raffle was fabulous, & not just because of what I hauled home, there were a variety & large quantity of great items. The money raised is going to a good fight, one that if won by off-road people will set a benchmark California wide. As I told Mary, "we may never wheel surprise canyon, but it is imporatnt to be opened for those that do want to go there"
Richard mentioned that this was the 2nd largest NAXJA event, he also was the organizer for the largest.
Thanks,
Tom

Any XL shirts left over from the event? If so, how do I go about getting one?

Some carnage, mostly body damage, but we did blow a seal in the stearing box.
looks like a wreckingball hit us in the doors.

Looks alot like the pics from my last trip out there. I was lucky enough to keep the glass but not the door handle. Nice pics.

My back doors are in great shape...
but after getting it pretty sideways on WB it was a bitch getting the door to shut. took me about 20min with some tools of persuesion and elbow grease to get the door to catch the latch.

So...when do you want to cage the beast?

Richard mentioned that this was the 2nd largest NAXJA event, he also was the organizer for the largest.
I'm glad that I was at both :)

nope. planing it out right now.
trying to figure out what tube to use.
doing math and calculating what will be the strongest and lightest way to go.
It appears that instead of 1.5" .120 wall, I can use 1.75" .095" wall which is stronger and lighter by .09# per foot.
Link material will be CrMo tig welded. Shocks are either going to be Radflo or Bighorn. I'll be picking up the bender next week from my buddy. Then I need to go by tubing. Probably won't start for a few weeks yet so I can finish up other jeeps. plus I think I want to clear out much of the garage so that I can do all work inside at my own pace. But there is a good chance that I won't have my jeep ready before st patty's day in march for the socalxj jambo. in which case I will bring beer and hang out.
crap, I better start brewing!

you're not chopping the top, right? as long as it's not going to be exposed to rock-rash, 1.75 .095 is a great choice.
have you priced Radflo shocks yet? I haven't seen any prices online, what are you finding?

Gonna try something different. if it works then it will be super cool and fun to wheel. haven't figured out how I 'm gonna do it but I at least have a clue and a concept. Now I just gotta do it.
