View Full Version : My Heep Build Thread.

POSJ

This is going to be my build thread that will start once I get to AZ. So far I have my turd, 1998 Cherokee 4dr Sport with: AW4, HPD30, D35.

Plan: 35's, 4.5" lift, 5.13's, cage, etc. But still be able to take it on the road every now and then.

Here is what I have so far parts wise:
The Heep:

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/DSC00384.jpg

The Axles and lift parts:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/DSC00387.jpg

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/DSC00386.jpg

HPD44 front, 4.10's with an aussie.
Ford 8.8" rear, 4.10's and LSD.
6" lift w/ homebrew longarms built by x2elite.

I need to pick up an SYE, wheels and tires before I can lift it. I'll be in AZ in October when this build thread should really start off. Until then I'll be collecting parts. I don't know how to weld, but I plan on buying a welder and some steel to practice, so if you want to teach I would be willing to learn.

Looks like you have done pretty good with the research on what to get to build it. Where are you moving to in AZ? I'm on the west side of Phoenix if your around here I'm a Welder/Fabricator so I could probably teach you a thing or two :lecture:

I'll be moving to Tucson, I'll be getting stationed at Davis-Monthan. I do have some friends that live up in Surprise, AZ so I'll be up in the Phoenix area quite often.

Got her in the trailer for the trip over to Tucson, got some measurements for how high I can make it and still get it in the trailer. Trailer door is more than 77" so I am using 76" as a base. Measured the Jeep and it is 65" tall without the roof racks. So my simple math skills deduced this lol: 76"-65"= 11" to play with between lift height and tire size. I am shooting for only about 4.5" or 5" of lift and want to run 36's or 37's with a light foot. Stock tires are 27.5" currently with the weight of the Jeep round up to 28". 11"-4.5"= 6.5" I have to play with in tire size. 28" plus 8" to hit 36's half the height for the tire increase and I am left with 2" so I can keep my roof rack. I even used a calculator to check it lol. Does everything sound right or is there anything I am forgetting?

IllogicalPro
September 7th, 2010, 22:05
you are forgetting the amount of cutting you will have to do to fit 36-37s with 4.5"-5" lift

POSJ

I have a sawzall, jigsaw, and a 4.5" angle grinder...I can cut all day lol.

You can easily fit 36's on 4.5" lift. That what I run and I don't rub. Brandoson is 4.5" and on 37's

Damn Tucson is beautiful, I can't wait to at least get the axles swapped and some tires on it so I can go drive around up in the mountains. Drove the Jeep around Rita Ranch and Vail today looking at houses seeing how it would do in the heat and it had no problems. Hopefully I don't have to make any modifications to the cooling system until I get it ready for the trails. Anybody have hood vents for sale just in case?

gimike812
September 16th, 2010, 06:00
There is a reason people call DM a retirerment Base. People come here and dont want to leave. You will be fine as far as the cooling sytem goes untill next summer. We will be cooling off in the next 2 weeks I promise.

Well my plans have just changed and not for the better. One of my dogs has a complete tear of her ACL and is going to need surgery. So $4,000 of my Turd build money is gone. The build is still going to happen just not until I save up money again...

blk88
October 15th, 2010, 23:26
4k to fix the acl? My wife and I had a little dog that tore his and it was around $800 for the surgery. Anyways, that sucks but totally respect the dedication to the pup. We have a very soft spot for the 4 legged kids. I could have a killer rig with all the money we've spent on dogs over the last few years, but the rig doesn't act like I've been gone all day when I just walk out to get the mail! Good luck with the surgery and the build.

POSJ
October 16th, 2010, 09:28
Yeah she weighs 105 lbs. so it costs a lot more, it is going to be a TPLO surgery. They can't make the nylon ACL with big dogs without it going out again. The build will happen just not as quick as I had planned. We are talking about putting the axles under it and wheeling it stock height locked while we save up money again lol.

35x12.5r15 KM2's or MT'r Kevlar's? Went to discount tire today and couldn't decide...I like the KM2 tread better but heard bad reviews of the sidewall...Discuss

jeep pox
November 23rd, 2010, 11:51
You called it... The KM2's are nice and ride decently quiet but the side wall have lots to be desired. I don't know anyone running the kevlars.

YEAGS
November 23rd, 2010, 12:47
Im running the kevlars up front still have the original mtrs in back. They are great really good traction even when wet. Not as loud as the original wranglers which is nice but not as quiet as the kms. I ve already slashed a sidewall on the kevlars though when i ran Pyeatte Draw and it didnt blow for a maybe a month later coming home from an LT run. Overall I love them. The wear is very good I still have 90% left on them and have put almost 10000 miles on them since I got them in april. I ran bfgs on my other jeep and its still a tossup on which I would choose if i was buying 5 more new. But as of now the kevlars are winning my heart.

POSJ
November 23rd, 2010, 13:09

YEAGS
November 23rd, 2010, 15:18
No problem mines a dd by the way and i put alot of miles on them. Oh and the only problem with the goodyears vs the bfgs is the warranty. Typicaly gy has a 3 year free replacement warranty thru discount and bfg i believe has a 4 to 5 year warranty. Definitely print out a receipt from an online store that sells the tires cheaper and take that in and discount matches the price and you cant beat their replacement warranty.

So the build has begun finally, a little later than I had planned but it is underway.

The Turd where it will be for a few weeks:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/Jeep%20pics/Christmas2010069.jpg

My workspace:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/Jeep%20pics/Christmas2010068.jpg

Started tearing apart the back first, lots of rust, a few broken bolts. Got everything out that I could without airtools:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/Jeep%20pics/Christmas2010070.jpg

As it sits right now...
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/Jeep%20pics/Christmas2010071.jpg

The air hose I bought wasn't crimped and leaked bad. I tried a do-it-yourself crimp job with a pair of channel locks and some thread seal tape and didn't help. So I jacked up the front and took the shocks out and disconnected the driveshaft. The D35 is ready to come out minus the ABS cables, what should I do with these? Cut them and pull the fuse?

POSJ
December 20th, 2010, 15:30
Ok, today I exchanged the hose for a new one and tried getting the U-bolts off with half way luck...too much rust on this pig. 2 U-bolts had to be removed with the help of a sawzall. But the D35 is out and just need to remove the leafs and then I'll put the 8.8 in. The front wasn't touched with a wrench, just PB blaster. Broke my 3/8" ratchet trying to remove the forward leaf spring bolt. So I am at a stand still until I can get a new ratchet and some bigger wrenches.

http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n25/FlatBlackXJ/Jeep%20pics/HouseandJeep001.jpg

Since the rear axle is out of the way I think I am going to order my new fuel pump, dropping the tank will be a lot easier with it gone.

when i lifted my rust bucket i had the same thing happen on the front leaf spring bolt. i ended up drilling out the bolt most of the way to the threads and then taking a dremmel with a small round metal bit used for decorative grinding/sanding and cut the remainder of the bolt like a pie down to the threads. then i took a chisel and broke the pieces of the pie off. the threads were left with only very minor damage and completely usable.

My list of things to do:
Measure for rear driveshaft length and get one ordered.
Tighten all front suspension hardware.
Bleed rear brakes.
Find an axle side tracbar bolt.
Install front driveshaft.
Probably more...

Mine us a 90. I like the hydro assist steering but I have not tried PSC. I have the AGR kit. I had so many problems with bad or wrong parts that I would not suggest AGR.

Just my opinion and nothing more. You may want to look at how mine is set up. I like not having it attached to my tierod. Mines high up and out of the way. So high that it only about 1/4 inch from the bottom of my oil pan.

Cut in some hood vents with an angle grinder and painted them black.

Did you just cut the slats and then bend them to get the louvered look? I like it...they need to be bigger though. Look awesome.

POSJ
March 25th, 2011, 20:10
Yeah, I just cut and bent with needle nose. I cut wherever I felt, all of it was eyeballed so it doesn't look too pretty in person but she photographs well.

yea they look good. I wish Id done it that way. The Home Depot floor registers dont look that great and are pretty effing. ghetto. Good thing I have a spare hood laying around!

True that John, waiting on the bumper to get a lift down here. The ballistic cover is super beefy I had to give it a bling paint job too since my Jeep is far from bling.

what are running for springs front and rear how high?

POSJ
October 24th, 2011, 18:31
Speed bump they are skyjacker fronts for around 3.5-4" lift and then the rear are flatish springs with shackle relocation brackets. Because of this obstacle I am going to raise my turd back up to ~6"...my break-over angle is garbage...

Anybody have a stock XJ that they can measure to the bottom of the drivers window at the back corner so I can see how much above stock mine sits? I raised my rockers this weekend so that measurement is useless now.

Best place to measure would be top of axle tube to the bottom the the frame. I'll measure my stocker and let you know. Unless you're wanting to know your break over compared to stock.

POSJ
October 27th, 2011, 08:08
JP, let me know what you measure and I'll figure it out. I need to know if 1 or 2" would be a better lift increase.
