Cable speed sensor question

The plastic orange gear that is connected to a rod, is that part suppost to be attached to the cable and not come off?

Basically I'm asking this because mine came off the cable line when I pulled the motor and tranny and now my speedo doesn't work, so I'm guessing the cable and gear assembely is suppost to be one unit or I put the darn thing back together in the wronG manner

Yes that's exactly what I'm talking about, so if it isnt attached to the cable it must not be seated properly, what is the procedure for installation?
