Hello, I am new to owning an XJ and have done a ton of reading thus far. I dont have a lot of wrenching (on XJs) under my belt so I am alittle unfamiliar in diagnosing problems.

Please help in diagnosing some noises I am getting.

1. I have a squeek going on after driving a short while. (~3min) ITs just a squeek squeek squeek ... after every rotation of the tires it seems like. After longer drives its extra loud. I've searched on this and it seems like a bushing needing lubrication? I dont know which one, I am willing to lubricate them all, EXCEPT I dont know where they are. Perhaps tell me the more probable ones. The squeek occurs all the time, driving straight, in a turn, doesnt matter, however I must have my foot on the gas pedal. I must either be accelerating or maintaining constant velocity.

2. My second issue is that whenever from a stop and accelerating I get a thunk that sounds like from the rear. After searching someone with a similar problem said it was a motor mount? Sound correct? I have no clue on this one, but a motor mount freaks me out.

TIA

Sounds like a good grease job is needed, check your drive shaft also for both the squeaks and clunks.

on your clunking problem, if it sounds like it is comming from the back, start looking in the back. Sounds like a u joint. jack it up, and see if you can move the drive shaft and see if you can locate the clunking.
My bet is your motor mounts need some love, if they have not been changed out. All the ones i have seen on jeeps are either torn up, shrunk up and moving inside the bracket, or have been changed out already. But you would hear the clunk up front too if that was the case.

My bet is ujoints.

Ok I crawled under and tried twisting the rear drive shaft by hand. I did not move at all. Should I jack it up anyway to be sure or should I look to the rear diff.? Could it be a transmission mount or transfer case mount? How much should the transmission move if I try moving it by the driveshaft (through the transfer case)?

I Popped the hood and it has new(ish?) polyurethane engine mounts on each side.

Also the squeek comes from the front driverside area. What bushings tend to wear on the front end most of the time, the quickest?

Bump for a new guy!

How do I check my transmission mounts?
