Building a (off road) trailer

Ive been having this huge and heavy roof basket laying around the yard, and I think I have finally decided what to do with it.

So here the base and frame of the trailer

And here is my choice of axle, Ch. 8.25

And I have two choices of leaf springs

one choice is these trailer spring and brackets that I picked up from a local store

And the other is the stock leafs off of a XJ.

Tires and wheels are stock XJ steelies and 225s

After (hopefully) some welding and bolting, this will be a tuff little trailer ready to hit the trails.

Nothing wrong with the XJ axle and springs,but other than that you dont have much.It would make a great rack to put on a trailer!We just got done lifting my sons to match his truck.

honestly, i would reconsider your axel choice, although it will work and free parts is always good , it will be like a boat anchor back there .i think your milage may suffer a bit too.. the only real advantage would be you would have spare parts if your jeep broke.. look for a 3500# trailer axle ..harbour frieght/princess auto..or similar .

well I thought it would be a great spare axle but the gears are only 3.07 and the gears in my jeep are stock so that wouldnt work either

I priced an axle with hubs and leafs for $120 online for my trailer build. so it can be done cheaply.

Chrysler minivan rear axles (or other minivan/front wheel drive vehicles rear axles)... a buddy makes about 1-3 trailers a year using those axles. Depending what your looking for the leaf set-up may not provide enough lift, as some are single leaf. However I think there are a few with multi-leaf options, or some that can have leafs added to them for proper height requirements.

I was going to order through this co, $135 for a 3500lb axle with hubs/lugnuts shipped. Very fair price.. but i found one local that i couldnt pass up.

absolutely no idea, sorry.

His trailers were not off-road specific, just routine everyday trailers that people would buy off him as opposed to spending x2 at a local store for something 1/2 as sturdy. He was just very big on these axles as they are cheap, and plentiful, and can take a fair load for the single leaf.

I couldn't find anything on the net here about wms, but I'm sure the info is out there.
