Probably best answered by Pox, Mud, DaveO, Kraker or whoever:

Thinking about building a 9" rear for the YJ. But not sure where to start, what to look for, what to avoid.

This guy has one for sale (I'd need to find the width and bolt pattern) but 33 spline sounds pretty good and the price seems ok too.

There are lots for sale cheap, but want to start with the right one. NOT IN A HURRY either, haven't even hung the 44 I built for the rear.

Thoughts?

it probably has 5x5.5 lug pattern, you'd need to find out if it is from a older bronco or a full size to know thw width or just make him measure

You need this!!! You need that!!! Quit buying into the hipe.

You don't need none of it when its high centered on jack stands!!!

Upgrade what breaks when it happens.

Matching 44's 1 spare u-joint, 1 spare wheel stud, 1 spare strap kit, 1 bearring kit
1 tire, 1 yoke, 1 pinion seal. etc......

Oh sure, next thing you'll tell me is that I shouldn't chrome plate my leaf springs! Calm down Charlie, I just want to be in the know in case a good deal comes along.

We're still on for you to do my fenders right? Krakers done with my rear - so my conglomeration of parts should be ready in no less than 2 weeks. Need driveshaft and shocks.

IMO, run the matching D44's. Like cdhowell said, one set of spares and you're good to go...granted, I have a waggy d44 in front and Toyota 8" in the rear of my YJ

Running a built 9 is a good idea but the bad is its a really LOW pinion I would for sure get a pinion guard for it the nice thing about the 9 is it can be strong... If you want to get crazy strong get 40 spline shafts and a 40 spline spool or detroit and never look back... I would say a 14 bolt is just about the only thing stronger but unlike the 9 its not like dragging around a boat anchor your dragging the whole friggin boat... The real drawback is to put a high 9 in the rear its like 2k just for the true high 9 chuck with gears OUCH... I think the 33spline should be more than strong enough unless you plan on running bigger than 37's then go to either the 35 spline or 40 spline shafts... But I run 44's and think they are just fine but I would recommend at least 33 spline shafts 35 if you can just for strength...

:wow: ... Well the his rear 44 is done. Now I can finally get to work on my pile. See you tmro Marshall. FWIW If i were going to build a rear 9. It would have to be a big bearing center section 609 low pinion.

The low pinion 9 is the not a good axle for offroading. The lowest pinion out there (2.25" below the axle centerline). That plus the fact that the pinion is short (10.6") leaves it VERY exposed to hazards (i.e. rocks, etc.). After a while they can be next to impossible to keep from leaking too with the crappy stamped housings like that. If I were building a street car I would run a Ford LP 9" all day long but for offroad it would not be wise decision.

The 8.8 has a 1.5" pinion below the centerline and with the longer pinion (11.7") rotate upwards keeps it out of harms way slightly better. Other than the fact it has C-Clips (where it is only an issue when a shaft fails) it is an excellent aftermarket upgrade from an 8.25 or a D35. I might consider an 8.8 over the LP9" for a light duty rig with 33" tires.

On the other hand, a high pinion 9" like the TrueHi9 (not the currie high pinion crap) is one of the best axles because the pinion is 2.25" ABOVE the centerline of the axle tube. Keeps great driveline angles plus keeps it out of harms way. Formed housings like Spidertrax, RuffStuff, and the newer Currie have proven to be far more durable housings compared to the stamped (crap) pictured above. Debates on its ability to withstand big horsepower have surfaced on this though.

Personally I like the low pinion D60 the best (specially when shaved). It has a pinion that is 1.125" BELOW the centerline with a 13.3" pinion. When rotated to point the pinion towards the transmission/tc, the driveline is very much kept out of harms way. RIDICULOUSLY cheap to build up too and one can run 35 spline semi float shafts affordably.

[I posted this yesterday in another place but I thought it may apply here]
