Posting this for a friend. Nothing that I have dealt with in the ownership of two XJs.

95 XJ Sport
Low beam headlights do not work.
High beam works.
Headlight switch replaced.
Dimmer switch replaced.
Both headlights replaced.
Low beam headlights still do not work.

Suggestions.

Fuse or broken wire?

I rewired my harness on my '96 to add relays and fuses to my headlights for heavier wires and I remember that there is a bundle of wires coming from the firewall on the driver's side that has the lights electrical in it. The bundle runs over to a large multi pin connector in front of the stock air cleaner box so you have to remove the stock air cleaner box to get to it.

It could be that there is some corrosion in the connectors at that junction.

If you don't have it, get one of the manuals. I think the Chiltons (I know the Haynes does not) has the wiring diagram in the back for the electrical. You kind of have to use it as a go by as it covers multiple years.

Check all the fuses with Ohm meter. If you don't have one get one from radio shack as they can be had for as little as $15. If you don't find a bad fuse, then pull the mulit-connector under the air filter box and find the wire for the low beams. Put the lights to low beam and measure the voltage from that wire to ground (bare steel on the body). You should have around 12 - 13 vdc.

I think there is also a relay or relays in the fuse block for the head lights that could be bad as well (I just don't remember for sure about the relays). There are 2 fuse blocks: one is under by the driver's feet and the other is in the engine compartment on the right side.

Check the connector for the front harness. It's right behind the left headlight, more or less underneath the air cleaner. Corrosion here is a very common problem and a very common cause for lost lights.

I had the same problem... Try this: If you pull the lever to go from low to high beams, there's a middle point where both "beams" will come on. I noticed that if I went from high back to low, I had to pull the lever in slowly so both beams would come on. worked every time. Never did figure out what it was that made it do that. I also swapped everything out.

thanks for the replies. I did do some reading on the headlight wiring in other posts and I appreciate the responses. I will pass the information on and see if the issue can't get fixed. If there is some magic fix that is found, I'll pass that on...lol.
