Okay, had the dryer stripped down to the blower. Lint catch was removed, drum looks in good shape.

I am getting a sound that is similar to a baseball card in a bike wheel when the thing is on, like something is grinding.

There is no play in the blower shaft, and everything appears normal.

What else do I need to check?

Make sure nothing in the outer drum has come loose and is clicking against the outside of the inner drum.

Also, make sure nothing is interfering with either of the pullys that drive the drum.

Obvious, I know - but it sometimes bears saying...

That is what I was thinking.

It was kind of a rushed teardown and re-assembly as the wife needed to finish the laundry.

I'll tear it down further tomorrow.

I had something similar in ours.
A piece of a plastic hanger was down in the lint trap portion, there was a blower down there in addition to the hot air blower.
Check out this website, it was most helpful

it had diagrams of most major models. Sure bailed me out after I forgot how to route the belt :D

Check the fan for anything on or around the fan that should not be there

I think you were dead on in the first palce...I think it IS a baseball card in the spokes...:D

I'd make sure there isn't something in the main drum creating a rub somewhere Gavin....it's happened to me before.

This website has some great stuff on it. I have repaired dryers, washers, dishwashers, refrigerators (ice maker) and every time the advice was dead on.

If it's a standard sort of dryer with a big belt that runs around the drum, and a pulley at the opposite end of the motor from the fan, take the belt off the motor pulley and start up the motor. That will give you the first step of diagnosing whether the sound is in the motor/fan or in the drum/rollers.

Already took it apart and found the bad motor, all thanks to 87manche's site.

Part is ordered, and on it's way.

Thanks all.

glad that worked out. I ordered a motor from there too when the bearings went.
sucks that you can't rebuild those.

Found a new motor with warranty on Ebay for $10, so I am happy too.

Awesome link.

Cut my hand up nice and good getting the damn thing out too.
