I am taking a trip to CA and will be going through Truckee, CA over Donner Pass. Does any one think that with a 10% chance of snow/rain that it will be closed Friday Night? I am planing on taking my car (better MPG) but does not have 4-wheel and does not have clearance for chains.... so if I will need chains or 4-wheel to pass I will need to take the jeep....

Thanks for any insight!

Ifyou mean the Highway. It'll be open. Even if it were to close it only be for a few a hours. That is a MAJOR trucking route, takes feet of snow to close it for more than a few hours. This time of the year, snow might not even stick.

Where are you Going, might not loose much time taking 15 south instead. But I don't think snow will be much of an issue. For me it's a 1.5 hours difference, to Spanish Fork, South route vs north route.

I'd take the Jeep! I've seen them turn people around who don't have 4WD or chains... even if it's only mild snow.

Heading up to Auburn, CA

Edit:

Its right of I-80 so any other way would add quite a bit of time....Leaving out of Salt Lake so further north then Spanish Fork... I says a 10% chance of precipitation, and a high of 47*....

Looks like Firday is now clear.... I think it should be safe...??

Also the Jeep does not have Cruse control... =-(

Take the car, bring your chains, 80 is the way to go if you are going to Auburn.

I don't think you will not even need chains, but it would be best to have them.

Guess I might not have been very clear on the chain... due to having my car 2" lower then stock and with tires that are a little larger that provide very little clearance by them selves to the fender and the strut tower I can not put chains on my car (I could do it in the back... but I am front wheel drive)....

I have good tires not studded snow tires but some of the best all-season high performance snow tires that can be had... but patrol cars dont care about that... guess I could tell them its a suburu... get a badge from the junk yard and put it on... =-)

Donner Pass is a crap shoot at this time of year, it closed for a bit on Tuesday. The forecasts call for 47*F then you should be fine wx.com is generally spot on.

I would be more concern with the 1st grade out of Wendover, that seems to close more than Donner.

Bring plenty of spare food just in case....

Yeah south route will add about 7 hours to Auburn. I wouldn't worry about the pass. If they close it, go have lunch or dinner, probably be open by the time your finished.

And don't forget the beer. Bring some Wasatch ale back with you. I'll trade you for some Stone IPA. I can be in Auburn in 15 minutes from my house:cheers:.

Drive safe.
