View Full Version : who has there 30 locked?

Im considering doing an aussie up front, I have been for a while, but Im swapping in a hp 30 so now would defenitely be the time to do it.
My rig is currently on 32"s and at most will see 33"s, mostly because of the d35 out back
will my front axle survive with a aussie and no chromo's/special u-joints? I wheel blues with the occasional black.
Any driving comments on-road or off? Some guys say its a bear to turn offroad with a locked frontend, is this true?

stock shafts with 760 spicer ujoint will be fine for 33's as far as turning off road if you have issues pop it into 2wd, i had a lockrite in the frt of mine worked awsome, if i went new i would def go aussie there a lil bit smoother

I am also locked upfront, however I am unsure of what Locker is in it specifically (bought it with it in). I have no problems out on the Blue's the way I'm setup and What Black's I've wheeled I've been fine.

good to hear guys, I was mainly worried about the shafts, and yes they will have 5-760s in them which are supposed make ht weak point the shaft
from what I have read the shaft will egg-out the slightest bit allowing the cap to be destroyed.

I have a lockrite in my front running 35's now with the crome's but I ran it with the normal axles for a long time. You should be fine

I have an aussie in my 30 works great. Have been running it on 34 LTBs this year and 33 bighorns for the 2 years before that, only broke ujoints.

35's, lockrite, 4.56's, stock shafts. Have not broken a shaft since installing the lockrite, broke 1 with the old Trutrac.

Exactly I never notice the damn thing unless I'm in 4x4. Makes it somewhat interesting somewhat while driving in the snow and ice, but no problems what so ever IMO. I love having it locked up front. I'd like a locker in the rear, but if I had a choice of only picking one I'd go with having the front locked.

I also like my aussie im running it with 31s for now and its great, hardly noticable on the street and great offroad , The turning is a little tight though offroad but im happy with it.

Grinding the shafts (both inner and outer shafts) to accept full circle clips should keep the caps in place, preventing this. You should be able to find the Circle clips at Lowes or HD. If I remember right they were 1.375"

I'll be putting an Aussie in my HP30 this week. I'm running 33's but plan to upgrade to 35's. I still have the stock 760 shafts, but I plan to bring spare shaft/u-joint/hub assemblies on the trail. If anything does go, the trail fix will be a lot easier.

If your u-joints in your shafts are stock, you have the 297 u-joints. The shafts accept 297/760 joints, but the only way to have 760s in your shafts is if you put them in yourself.

x2. My D30 is locked, but electric selectable. It's the only way to go for me since the XJ is my foul weather/winter driver. I ran with the front locked only and factory limited slip for a while, then front only. If you have to lock only 1, go front IMO.

I wouldn't run a stock D30 carrier on 35s ever again, granted I enjoy the WIN pedal.
This was with stock shafts, x760s, and full circle snap rings.

I use aussie's F&R on my XJ and aside from breaking a couple shafts (they were used when I got them and I was running red obstacles with them so) but I haven't had any issues with them on 35's since I got the alloys. I do blacks every time I go to Rausch and ran my XJ in the RCROCS interclub comp last month with zero breakage and that was no walk in the park.

What gear ratio was that? 4.88 it looks like, kinda hard to read.

yes 4.88's, ive seen 4.56's 4.10's and 3.73's all blow up, the 30 simply does not like large tires
robsjeepxj
May 1st, 2010, 21:55
I've seen that happen with another 30 with 4.88's, the pinion head just gets so small at the ratio that it has very contact area with the ring gear and can do that if your too crazy on the gas. I drew the line at 4.56 on mine.

Wouldn't have been a problem if the stock carrier didn't flex.
A full-case would have helped.

I use the ruffstuffs cover on both F&R. I think it helps stiffen it up some but you can only expect so much from the 30, I'm pushing it way past what it was designed to do from the factory. That's why I'm easy on the throttle, I hope that's never a picture of my diff.

april-october, had no issues with little to no throttle. but once you get into the mucky rock I will agree with you, the go pedal can be your friend at times.
the most throttle I had to use wheeling was actually in december, green trails like d suddenly become alot harder when theres 4 inches of ice on top the mud...

thats the diff between rc and new england, down there shit is ran all the time, most of the rocka are clean and have lots of traction, up here shit isnt overrun, most of it is goverd in moss or has mud on the bottom very rarley can you crawl stuff

I have a lunchbox locker in mine, on 33's, for a couple of years. I broke a shaft for the first time last weekend, the ears shore right off, ujoint lost in the mud I guess. I was gunning it with the wheel at full lock, stupid stupid stupid. Probably would have broke with stock wheels and no locker.

I run a lock rite in my d30 with 35s, Ive been wheeling once with the 35s and took it easy and no breakage. When I had 30s and 34s I did full throttle assualts and never broke a shaft. I blew a ujoint once but I think that had to do with running in FWD. I want to find a ARB or OX for kicks, and get a truss for it, inner c gussets and what not. also find out what the XXXX is wrong with my gearing shit.

33's with aussie in the front - never broke a shaft
35's with aussie in the front - broke 3 axle shafts (all short side), one time I broke one 5 minutes after replacing one. That was frusterating.
All the time's i've broken a shaft I was throttling hard. Either in a sand pit, mud, or up a hill. I think the culprit is the C-Clip coming out and the cap coming out. I'm going to tack weld my caps. I don't really care about being able to replace the ujoint. I have so many spares (thanks hollands all you can carry! :))

A friend of mine has a cammed 5.3L in his TJ and he had a D30 on 33's with a lock-right, stock 3.73's and stock shafts. Took him 2 years to spit out a u-joint and this dude is well known in our club for lots of skinny pedal. He just finished upgrading to D60/14b, so he shouldn't have problems anymore...
I just put an ARB in my D30 along with 32's and 4.56's/ruff stuff cover. I'll be testing it out for the first time this weekend. RCV shafts are standing by in case something breaks. Couldn't get them in ahead of time because they had to ship me two new design CV boots. I've never been shy with the throttle either.
