As you all know, I have been struggling to find a suitable replacement motor for the now blown replacement motor in my rig -- found one with the right stuff at the right price... but it was in Fruita (west of Grand Junction). While I had threads going both here and at the now-despised CO4x4.org, I wasn't having any luck...

Led gives me a ring on Monday and says "hey man, I have a guy driving from GJ to pick up some 37" creepies, maybe he can drag your engine" -- I PM Steve (jeephead93 @ co4x4) and lo and behold, I now have a 1999 4.0 with 75k on it in my garage as of a few minutes ago. Thanks Steve, and THANKS LED, I owe you a cold one! :yelclap::cheers:

Hey Chris, You are very welcome for the transport of your new powerplant. Yes it's true that I am on Co4x4 BUT I am also a member of NAXJA and proud of it! BTW- I will take you up on that cold brew later in may. Can't wait to try out those new Creepies! Thanks LED! :wierd:

Right on Steve - If I'd known you were here I would have had a "thanks Led and Steve" thread -- why are you "jeephead93" at CO4x4, and "jeephead87" over here?:confused1

I will gladly get you a cold one at the brewery in Moab. The old one is out, I'll post pics of the hole in the block and matching but smaller hole in the oil pan tomorrow. Stripped all the TJ stuff off the new motor, its on the hoist and about to get an APN header and my Centerforce clutch and flywheel bolted on. Hopefully she'll be running tomorrow night -- cross your fingers!:shiver:

When I joined Co4x4 I had a '93 XJ and when I joined NAXJA I have my current '87 XJ (aka as Aaron Storms old Green Monster).

Sounds like all is going well with the latest transplant :yelclap: I wish I could have helped you with the surgery but I was promoting and selling tickets for the 2010 Colorado Association of Four Wheel Drive Clubs 98 XJ raffle vehicle. It an I are going to be at Veterans Park here in Canon City all Blossom weekend. If you are in the area stop in and say hello and get a few tickets for a good cause! :yelclap:

We made good progress yesterday but ran into a high idle problem. I'm sure Chris will post up when he has a chance and provide details.

Done, runs like a top, definitely pulls harder than the HeepII powerplant before it, and in fact it has more juice than the latest iteration of the not-running so well stroker.... now, we'll see if it can last a week.

Chrysler's inability to utilize common parts on a common engine in multiple vehicles is absolutely staggaring - no wonder they went bankrupt. This engine is from a TJ, going into my XJ, both of them 1999's -- A/C mount is different. Alternator mount is different. Fuel injector type/plug is different. The freaking water pump is different and uses a different pully. cripes, what a PITA.

Frank and I thought we had it done last night, fired it up and it idled at 3k, even with the throttle body completely covered. Not so good, major vaccuum leak. We checked all the lines, tried tightening the manifold bolts. No dice. Sprayed around some starter fluid to try and find the leak, and sure enough it was the underside of the manifold. After Frank left, and after I had a meal for the day, I crawled under there with a drop light and I'll be damned if there was no gasket surface at the bottom of the intake manifold. I don't know what the gasket I used was for (pretty sure it came with my old Borla manifold for the last XJ), but the intake port cut-outs were about 1/4" bigger than the other manifold gaskets I had on hand. I fanagled the leaky mother out of there and managed to insert an almost-new one with the right dimensions back in, tightened it all down and walla (?), idles at 750.

Now I just need to sort the incredible pile of parts in my garage into Yella's pile, and a sell-to-try-and-make-some-money-back-TJ-parts pile... and maybe get a car back into the garage at some point...

Back to trailer projects, Moab is looking more realistic every day -- thanks to everyone involved!:peace::wave1:

Different motor mount brackets too.

All it went fairly smooth. 5 Hours to finish a few bolt -on's, drop the new motor in, including water pump and bracket swaps. Not too shabby for 2 guys.

Oh, BTW...
Chris,
You can keep the hoist. I'll buy another.
