Happy Veterans day! Thank you for your sacrifice to perseve our way of life. I served for 5 years but no body was shooting at me. Big difference. .:worship:

When I watch the news, it is hard to get a good sense of what is going on in Iraq. I was watching a story, and they were interviewing the troops on the ground. Everyone of them kept saying over and over that they hope, "the folks back home know we are doing the best we can". I know that just might be how they cut the story, but I can't help but wonder if that is the general line of thought.

I in no way want this to be a political thread. What I want to know is, do our service members take the criticism of Washington's handling of the war, as criticism against the troops? I'm not even saying the debates are right or wrong, I don't even want to get into that. It is so easy for me sitting at home to think that the "boots on the ground" don't take this personally, but am I wrong? Is it hard to keep the fight with all the yackin' going on back home?

I just want to say that whatever I think about the war, I know that you, our sevice men and women, are doing the same great job that has been done for the last 200+ years. There is no equal to men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces. Period! Thank you for carrying the torch.

The personnel I know that have had multiple trips to Kuwait & Iraq have shown me photos and told me tales of all the good going on over there. I believe them, not the media. My own little piece of knowledge is the false reporting and news footage of the detainees at Guantanamo Bay. The photos are mostly file footage from the 1st four months until the newer camps were built. Rarely do you see the newer camps make the news.

In my opinion, most of my friends including some of my family members just don't get it.

Talking to my roomate who got back about 2 weeks ago from Falluja it sounds like they understand that anyone over here has no idea whats going on over there. With all the media coverage people think they are seeing whats actually happening over there, but in reality they still have no idea. The grunts take any criticism with a grain of salt because they know most people dont even know what they are talking about.

It is sad that in this "information age", most of it is misinformation. That is what is frustrating about Iraq, no real information. News crews come to my work kind of regularly. We give them the standard spiel, and answer their questions. They never get the info right. When we watch they always misquote, and report false information. And these are just informational stories, not "investigative" reporting.

That is interesting that you say that about Gitmo. I know they built a regular prison for them, but I still see the same footage of the old cages. The sad thing is that I didn't put the two together till you said that.

I tired of being treated like a mushroom too. The media should talk to the troops and tell the truth about what is going wrong from a patriotic perspective. I love to here a perspetive from someone who has really been there and not just dropped in to do a story.

Most of the time when watching the news I feel like my countries news service is reporting on a foreign country that is loosing and gloating about it. Total BS. I meet folks everyday that don't even think there a real war going on. No wonder I watch the history channel alot, I hate being bullshit about the future. Thanks for your service and sharing the reality that we are at war and can win it if all Americans stepped up and quite fighting about BS.

The media doesn't care about the truth or the "whole story"-all they care about is what "sells".

Thanks to all our vetrans- wheather you were shot at or not- and to all current active duty and reserves. :us:

i agree, and i stand firmly against anyone who says other wise. if they havent been there, they have no idea what really is going on. i have several classmates here at the citadel that have been over in iraq and they all want to cry or lash out when they hear the bs the news puts through.

i found this a while back and i figured i would share:

It's the Military, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It's the Military, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It's the Military, not the politicians that ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. It's the Military who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag

Thanks to all the great american veterans and god bless you all.

"Everything you hear in the media is true, unless you have firsthand knowledge of the facts."

My neice is now on her second rotation in Kuwait, and I've got some buddies who are rotating through Iraq and Kuwait as well. I don't believe the news - haven't for a long time.

We're starting off on the right foot for "nation-building," but the media needs to bring themselves abreast of the situation on the ground there ("shit sells" is the maxim of the news, unfortunately...) and the politicians need to stop being involved. The soldiers get called out when the politicians don't do their job - there's no reason for them to stay involved once they've already blown the gig...
