I'm thinking of buying this old Chief, but I would want to swap in my 4.0 and tranny.

Go to OEM tech forum. There is a sticky at the top and it covers searching.

Essentially the NAXJA

forum BB software's search engine can't do 3-or-less character searches. The sticky explains how to use Google and filter the results for NAXJA

whoa, dont think Ive ever seen an '84 before. or a picture of a 4cyl engine in a cherokee before.

Ive asked this before, so ill just ask it again, has ANYONE ever seen a 97-00 4cyl xj?

Several, why? When I was considering going MPI on my '89 I was gonna scavenge from a couple in the JY.
