Quick fuel pump question

1992 4.0 HO

The fuel pump should continue pumping if it has 12v supplied, correct?

As in I have the fuel pump pulled and in my hand and have a known 12v going to it.

Yes that thing is dead.

pretty sure but its a bad idea to run it dry. and i know direct power from a car battery will burn it up quick fast and in a hurry....made that mistake once

Volvo made a big fuss back in the early eighties about NOT bench testing in-tank fuel pumps (or any electric fuel pump that is lubricated by the fuel). Volvo claimed they have a tendency to "grenade". I have never read of any actually blowing up, but running it dry is about the quickest way to ruin the pump.

I could hear it try to come on but it was just making a thud noise in the tank. So I pulled it out to check and make sure. Thanks guys.

I'm also pretty sure what put another nail in it's coffin, aside from my Cherokee having over 300k miles. More on that later.....
