I usually try to get the high mileage stuff. I'm not really too brand picky, but I try and stay away from the Brand X stuff. Penzoil, Valvoline, Mobil, etc. I usually slap in the tried and true 10W-40 and let it ride. :D

The best thing to do is make sure you use lubricants that meet the manufacturers requirements and keep up with scheduled maintenance.

I run Mobil 1 engine Oil. Synthetic gear oil and trans fluid. Can you tell I like synthetics.

I usually run whatever high mileage full synthetic is on sale when i'm in the store and also swap out one quart for lucas oil additive.

My oil is brown...and made from dinos. Get what you WANT...I won't say it's all the same because then the machine guns come out, but seriously, just put in oil and call it done.

The only difference in our engines is synthetic or regular which leads to change interval times... (flamesuit on)

Frankly, at the rate my rms is starting to leak I don't think I'll ever have to change oil again. I'll just add a quart every month.

In my Jeep I went with whatever was on sale that was a good oil, usually Kendall 10-30 synthetic blend or Castrol GTX, sometimes I'd go full synthetic if it was on sale. I'd go with either K&N oil filters or AC Delco, I stayed away from everything else, especially Fram oil filters. Just don't like them.
As far as wires go, I use Mopar wires, cap and rotor, but things like Duralast regular or gold wires and Duralast gold cap and rotor would be good as well. Gold, not silver contacts is what you are after if they have that option.

Something worth noting though is that once you go syntehtic you should never go back. So keep that in mind the next time your short on cash and dont want to pay the extra bucks for synthetic once its already in your engine. I run Castrol 10W30 or 10W40 in all my cars since I was 16. Never had a problem and never will as far as Im concerned.

Castrol 20/50 GTX and a Mopar or Fram filter.
I have heard some people that went full synthetic, after using regular oil, developed leaks due to the smaller molecules in the oil.

People bash Fram, but I have used Fram since I started working on cars back in 1974 and have NEVER had a filter or motor failure.
Well... I have had one motor failure but the car had bad oil pressure when I bought it so I knew the motor was on it's way out. '78 Nova Rally.
Lost the motor 1 week after buying the car. Busted rod.

Castrol GTX 20w50 and Bosch oil filter for me in my old XJ (230,000 miles). Bronco gets Castrol GTX 10w40 with motorcraft filter(130,000 miles) and Benz gets Mobil 1 10w40 with german filter (160,000 miles w/ 10k oil changes) and wifes accord get 10w40 GTW with Denso filter (234,000 miles).

After reading about the low sulfur levels in Mobil 1 (and almost all oils now) if I have a flat tappet motor I would run diesel oil in it (assuming it meets SM (or it is SL) requirements. They say it only really matter on new build motors but I wouldnt want to take a chance.

STAY AWAY FROM PENNZOIL !!!!!!!! Serious!!!!! All oil is NOT the same.

Walmart! Mobil 1 High Milage Full Synthetic 10w40 and Mopar oil filter. Like $30 plus tax. I prefer Autolite copper cores for plugs. Also I have heard that the Walmart brand Full Synthetic oil is made by Valvoline.

What I use

Wix or napa filter (same just depends on where I get it) I used a bosch filter last time but for the sake of your engine stay away from bargan filters like fram stp etc they are all crap!

5 quarts delvac 15w-40 diesel spec oil (its a 15k Mile oil for big rigs) and the rest is
Lucas oil stabilizer

Champion spark plugs eiter the resistor or truck plug what ever is in stock right now I've got the resistors

Wires cap and rotor are all napa's house brand no sence in spending more for nothing more

Like its been said new oils are lacking what our engines need and the diesel stuff is closest to it with out paying a arm and a leg for special blends, my heep didn't like the full synthetics and the extra cost didn't help either.
If your oil is super dirty or gritty feeling use some seafoam in the oil and it should clean it up in a few hundered miles you'll need to change it again

ATF is about a 10wt oil.

If you want to thicken it, maybe some straight 30w

The thing I was told about synthetics is that they are not a "true" synthetic. The "real" synthetic stuff is like 60 bucks a quart and is used for racing applications.
The normal stuff you buy at an auto parts store should work fine. I've ran everything from the cheapest house brand oil to some full synthetic stuff in my Jeep without problem. Now, I wouldn't switch from full synthetic to house oil after every change, but I don't think any harm would be done if it was done once or twice. If anything just to be sure, I'd just go from syn-half syn-conventional just to be safe, but I don't think anything would happen. This is all personal preference though and from my experience with my Jeep 4.0L. It could be completely different with say, a Jag engine.

MOPAR filter, MOPAR low ash 15w40... I change it when ever I remeber, usually well after the 3k mark.

If you run synthetic, look into some ZINC additive... your cam and lifters will thank you

A lot of us are running thicker oil 20W50 to slow/stop drips and or raise low oil pressure (me), but if your pressure is good and you aren't leaking all over the driveway you should be able to get away with 10W40...

I am still scared to try synthetic oil in my jeep engines...

Depending on price/where I can get the filter depends. Mostly use Napa Gold (same as Wix), then Bosch if I go for the VATOzone special but found a place semi-local that sells Hastings Filters For under 8$. Donaldson makes Hastings, Baldwin, and Amsoil filters.
I use Amsoil AMO.. its 10W-40 with added ZDDP, which is what out XJ's need. I have used other Amsoil fluids with no Issues, but this helps. Some places carry Amsoil, most do not.
For the Full syn. oils that are pretty much everywhere, I recommend Valvoline SynPower (has added ZDDP as well) and Pennzoil Platinum

I have heard this a few times but I don't think Mobil 1 has it and when I had my engine apart (it's been run on Mobil 1 since I have had it) there were no unusual signs of wear on the cam or lifters. Maybe Mobil 1 has some kind of similar additive :dunno:

I switched to Castrol Edge 10-30 jeep runs great, I get it at wal mart usaly on sale for 21.xx for a 5 quart jug. Then pick up a K&N oil filter. For the AX-15 Redline oil is the only way to go, shifts so much better! I got the same motor oil in my accord in 5-30 and I put 8-10k mi on it before I change it. I drive 500 freeway miles a week. This time I got a oil test kit, that they send you a bottle and after XX amount of miles you want, send it in and they tell you a full oil analsys. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ they send you the test kit for free, then think it 25 or 30 bucks. But I wanna test out how much life this oil has left after 8k miles on it.

Castrol Edge, Think with your dipstick Jimmy!

I used some synthetic blend (Shell T5) Longer drain interval? (
never messed around with this blend stuff before)

Johnnie Walker
April 18th, 2010, 13:55
Some say blend is a waste, as it really is mostly dino oil, but the price different of most compared to dino is minimal. I do think it is a good step in deciding whether to switch to full syn or not for some with higher mileage engines.
Depending on the filter you are using, you may want to change it around the same time you would dino oil. One of the reasons I use synthetic is the extended drain interval.

Frankly, at the rate my rms is starting to leak I don't think I'll ever have to change oil again. I'll just add a quart every month. You and me both... a month ago I was blowing a quart out the RMS/everywhere else every 150 miles. I got my own personal smoke screen every time I came to a stop light. reattaching some hoses that came out of my CCV+vacuum system fixed it somewhat but it still blows a bit out when I romp on it.

I did a full synthetic oil change, and when I went back, my RMS blew out. Now I look like a Piccolo Pete going down the road because the darn thing shoots out onto my exhaust. :DYeah... see above :D I have to remember to idle/engine brake for about a quarter mile before getting off the highway if there is a light at the end of the ramp because otherwise I'll smoke up bad.

I've only seen pictures of the sludge pennzoil leaves behind, but that's enough for me.

Also I think you're talking about zinc (ZDDP in particular) not sulfur, but could be wrong.

I decided to go with Valvoline high mileage 10w40 becouse it was on sale for $2.49 a quard and got the Mobil oil filter.I went to take off the screw on the oil pan to drain the oil and the screw won't come out it just turns and wont come out.I guess I will have to drill it out and retap it and replace the screw or what do you guys think?

Wow, now that's a dick with a high fluid capacity!!

I Usually run Castrol 20/50 in my 4.0's, with a WIX/Napa Gold filter (used to use Fram's XtraGuard filter with Teflon with no probs, tho). I run Valvoline Synthetic Blend 5/30 in Screaming Mimi (1.5L Mitsu Mirage).

if you have a limited slip differential (TracLoc is the factory one) in your axle, make sure to run the special additive in with it...
