View Full Version : IC Shop Day May 19th

November 10th, 2006, 01:02
The next round of the Intermountain Chapter Shop Days starts this Saturday, November 11th. Jerry (grandpaxj) is the teacher in the automotive shop at Box Elder High School in Brigham City and has graciously arranged this for IC members as an Adult Continuing Education class.
In order to meet school requirements and offset the cost of electricity, water and consumables, a fee must be paid to participate. The cost is $50.00 for 4 sessions, of which $40 goes to the school and the remaining $10 goes to support our chapter. Each session will be 4 hours long, from 11am to 3pm, which breaks down to a mere $3.00 an hour. We need at least 6 people to participate.
You must supply your own parts. Keep in mind that Jerry is able to get significant discounts on aftermarket lifts, tires and performance parts to IC members. Please contact him directly regarding these discounts. The shop is very well equipped to handle most tasks that can be accomplished in 4 hours.
Even if you don’t need to work on your rig we still encourage you to attend and help out others. This is a great opportunity to use this valuable resource and meet other IC members.

Go down 200 South, cross over Box Elder Blvd, and make a left after the first building. You'll make an immediate left into the fenced in compound.

Yep, I did lots of work but didn't accomplish anything. :)
BTW Jerry, as of now the 9th doesn't look good for me, but that may change. I won't know until that week. I may take you up on the offer to come up on November 21st. You said the 22nd was open as well, right?

What type of fitmet issues. I'm looking at install the RE drop brakets soon.
Tom R.
November 14th, 2006, 15:38
The bracket arm that ties in the main drop bracket with the old upper control arm bolt didn't line up. Part of the problem was likely due to the lack of sufficient space to accurately drill out the existing UCA holes in a level manner. The drill bit wasn't long enough to drill out the inner bolt hole from the outside.
The upper bolt hole on the bracket arm is slotted to account for some variance, but I had to open mine up a bit more using a dremel. That took a little time. Now that I think about it, I should have used my dremel to open up the inner UCA bolt hole instead of drilling it at somewhat of an angle.
The other issue is the main drop bracket didn't fit flush into the old LCA pocket. The welded joints on the drop bracket need to be ground flush.
None of this is over the top, but things I learned as I went along. 4 hours just wasn't enough time. Next time I should get twice as far in half the time.

I guess when I posted up about the amount of time, I should have mentioned that you need an 18" drill bit...

Jerry,
PM or post an address, and who you want this check made out to, and I'll send you a check to cover the sixth spot for shop days. Please let me know. I'd hate to see this great opportunity go away just because you're lacking one person’s payment.
Thanks,

During the spring session, can I pull my trailer up to swap axles.(of course after paying for the sessions) LOL

November 17th, 2006, 09:55
How much time do you think it would take? I have a fork lift and a large A frame with twin hoists. I picked up my trailer and put it upside down to make work eaiser. I would think you could get it done. Jerry

It is a tent trailer so turning it upside down is out, but it should only take a few hours.

If you want it you can have it! It is sprung under, solid shaft, no brakes, for 4 lug tires.
It is actually cheaper to have an axle built to specs for lift than to do it myself with shackles and springs. LOL

November 17th, 2006, 20:24
I'll think about it, I really don't want a 4-lug, I want the same size and spacing as the Jeep. I'm just not sure if it's worth the $$ for that spacing. Let me know when you're ready.

I finally got the control arm lowering kit installed, though between the first shop day and today I used up all my shop time. :)
What a pain in the rear it was! Bump steer and general wandering are noticeably reduced, as are the jars from bumps in the road. I also noticed less nose-dive when braking. The fit wasn't exactly good, but I understand there are variances between XJs. Knowing what I know now I kind of wished I had opted for the long arms.......I think.
Thanks to Jared for the help.......couldn't have done it without you (at least without Jerry killing me). :)

So Tom, how much lift do you have?
Are you satified with it or are you thinking the longarms would have been a much better option?
Tom R.
December 14th, 2006, 17:48
I have 6" of lift.
I really don't know if the long arms would be worth it as I've never experienced them. I already had the adjustable LCAs and UCAs, so the drop brackets were cheaper for me at this stage.
So far I'm happy with the results. It isn't as much of a positve change as I expected, but certainly better than short arms with no drop. I still need to dial in my caster, so hopefully the change will be even better.

I have a long list of things I've got to get done, but if you run into a problem during the install I will certainly help out.
To help prepare and save a little time before actually starting the work, check all of the welds on the parts that will mate up with other parts of the brackets (e.g., main bracket to support braces). Grind any large weld beads flush so the parts fit better.

Shouldn't have that problem, these are used.
I did have to drill a new hole and widen another on the braces as I have a manual tranny and the cross member is farther forward. Got one side on and found that I could not get my control arm to fit. They look to have been pulled tighter from the first install. So took the bracket off and wedged some scrap metal in to spread the side a bit. If this odoes work I'll have to touch up the paint again. Good thing it can sit in the garage for a bit.
The jeep has been sitting outside. Apparently a fair amount of ice had built up behind the plastic in the fenders. It was not so fun having the ice melt and drip on me the whole time. :(

Yes, but when it doesn't even start and I haven't a clue as to what is wrong with it, I have no way to get it somewhere but have it towed. So I have it towed to the local auto repair shop of the day. And unfortunately, it happens to be my only means of transportation. :( So waiting for it to get fixed is not always an option.

Ha! I have this problem too. Had someone tell me you can take them apart and tighten the bolts.
I would not suggest this since I never got to the bottom of all the bolts and it took me over 4 hours to get it back together.

I'll be there. Jerry -- is it possible that someone could help me do the following to my brakes? They squeak really bad but the tire store says the brakes are fine.
Well the squeaking while you coast could be a number of things not brake related, but if it is brake related i recommend wirebrushing the knuckle mounting ledges for the brake pads and lightly greasing them. That cured my similar problem (if the ledges aren't smooth the pad will get hung up on them)
The squeak when you let off the brakes i'd also bet money on being the rear drums. There are grease points indicated in the FSM where the shoes rubs against the mounting plate......i imagine yours are a little dry. I used to have this "problem" when i had drums, but i got tired of them and just put on zj discs.
But, there are a ton of possibilies here

I would love to know the dates for the May shopDay. I was given good fortune by the tax refund jeep gods and got a set of 4.56 gears for my 30 and 8.25.
the only problem is the wife went and took the rest of the money and bought a car with it!:bawl: now i have no more $$ for install. im hoping there is someone who can assist with a gear install for beer (if disired) and pizza.
so far i have the gears, and master install kits. i still need a new carrier for the D30 as its going from 3.55 to 4.56. i will also transfer over my aussie from the old carrier to the new.

What Ryan said for advive to you is correct, it would take at least 7 hours for a good mechanic to change both R&Ps and correctly set them up, thats with no problems. The average repair shop would charge 5.5 hours for the rear and 7 hours for the front. Next shop days is May 19th, Ryan would you please post that date thanks, Jerry. Make sure you can flip the axle. Some have an bow in the axle so when weight is added the tires have the correct camber. You may need to weld on new spring perches to spring over the axle.

Just look at the axle. If it is bowed upwards then you will need to put on new perches. You may need to jack up the trailer to take the weight off. I did it at home. When I jacked up the trailer the bow upwards in the axle was obvious.
Perches were about either $2 or $4 each (can't remember) at a trailer dealer in Layton. Measure the axle tube diameter before you go to purchase the perches! It raised my trailer about 3 inches.
Then again you could just flip the axle but the tires may wear wrong and it may not track as well.

You must host them on the Internet somewhere before you post them here. You can't transfer pictures from your computer to this site. A Google search should yield a few web sites that offer free hosting. They'll have the FTP that allows you to upload them.

The next BIG problem is that the following weekend is a 3 day holiday weekend, then school is out. those people whom I owe a shop day to will have to collect it in September.
