I've restored the lunette back to proper function, removed alot of the extra crap, and am going to drag it on a few runs as is before I decide to go back to stock or mod it out. Gotta finish putting my jeep together before it gets too much love.

One last question.
Playing with the lights today and there's 6 wires going to the tail lights, 2 pairs of 3. One pair works the black out lights which i'm not concerned with, the other pair works the main lights.
Out of the 3 plugs one works the tail lights, one works the left blinker and one works the right. When I hook power to the light that runs the tail light it's faint like the light should be when just the headlights are on, the blinkers are brighter like how the brake lights should be. How can I hook this up so that I can run the lights off of the Jeep?

I always liked them, used to live out of one for weeks at a time behind our M151. One weekend our entire FIST section built dog houses on them out of 2x4's and 3/4 marine plywood camo painted and weathertight. Then when we went to Ft Drum with division they tried to 'reallocate' OUR trailers to THEIR support people. We built them so that 4 people could each grab a corner and lift it stright up and out and drop it in another trailer. They got our trailers sans dog houses and were mighty ticked off...

Well I went and got it today. It's much cleaner than I could have hoped for, fenders are straight and the rear wasn't chopped! Tires even held air just fine. The lighting system hasn't been touched, it's still at the milspec 24 volt with the oddball connector. Sweet!
Tried to give the old lady money for it but she just wanted it gone and refused, so I got it for the low low price of free, can't beat that!

The pintle eye was cut off but all that was modified was the shank. If I can find a new pintle shank with eye it'll be golden. The only other problem is that the landing leg is broke, again I'll have to source another.

From what I can tell, and I very well could be wrong, the above pictured style lights are a newer style than the ones I have, they came on M416A1's as well (the ones with surge brakes).

If you can find a military XJ it will have the full blackout setup including that big assed switch box with the 3 toggle type switches on it. The MP's down at Ft Dix and up at Ft Drum used to run around in them out in the field with radar guns setting up speed traps for tracked vehicles and checking log books..

One of the PO's cut the rear wall off which had the VIN on it so I had to register it as a custom built rig, they also removed the lunette and replaced it with a driveshaft and it works well all I need is a pin and it's on. I think mine was with the Connecticut Ntl. Guard at one time as it says CTI over the camo is a couple of spots, under all the camo is olive drab and a few white stars. Wish I new what year range it it.

Zoro,
Chck page one, there is a manual posted there for M416's (and you are correct, you do have an M416), in that manual it tells you where all the data plates are (there are three), so you may be able to find one of the old ones (painted over perhaps) and find the VIN and/or date of delivery.

Don't know if they still use them there, Dix was turned over to the state of NJ back in 95 or so, now the state rents out the buildings and field areas to other units, USMC, USN, USCG, USA, USAR, NJNG, BATF, basically the whole alpabet for anybody who needs office, training and range space. I don't think the regular army does the MP thing there anymore.

Hmm, according to the manual I am missing two of the data plates, the other is still there but has been painted over, unfortunately the only plate remaining is the one that says responsible agency, procurement, depot maintenance, chasis body and production equipment and US property at the bottom according to the manual. I can't believe I almost removed it, but I thought it might be important.
GSequoia
December 11th, 2006, 18:31
Actually there are only two on an M416, took me a bit to figure it out but the long rectangular one you see if actually for a M569A1, a derivative of the M416 from what I understand.
My rear data plate is there but is unstamped so I don't know the VIN either. I have pictures that might include a serial number but don't know. Any military maintenance guys or whoever is in the know let me know.
My trailer was in the marines; I am guessing it's a 1963 model only because there is a 63 in one set of numbers and that year seems right for what it is (and the lights it's equipped with).
Here are the pictures, let me know what you guys know:

http://events.sequoia4x4.com/d/17028-2/IMG_0005_001.JPG
Note: The 233?-00-706-5496 is just the NSN number and I do know that. (it's on the data plate), the 372734 number is the USMC number (tag, dunno...) that is also on the sides and rear of the trailer.
What does that stuff in the lower right mean? I don't know what the complete phrase is, all I can make out is this:
ROLLBA
METHOD
LCN 0000
MIN. PRES.
5/92
I'd like to restore this trailer, including all relevant markings, so I'd like to know if I should include this...

Those would be the unit markings, I'm somewhat familiar with the unit markings the Army uses but I can never tell w/the Marine markings.
Just pulled the only tag remaining on the trailer off of it, underneath there was an undisturbed and mint condition coat of olive drab.
The tag has been apinted over atleast once and on the back it is black and the spots w/o paint on the front are bare metal, which are a couple small scratches. How can I go about removing the paint from the tag w/o removing all the important markings?

If I recall that is what my frame looks like except the angle iron cross bars are flipped around (single edge on top with tub bolted into it). Should be able to get some pictures later on.
Can I please get a detailed picture of your data plate? If I could see the format of the serial numbers I might be able to work out the serial number and/or date of manufature based on the markings on the trailer.
From some research I think my trailer was remanufactured by the USMC at some point (possible 1987, that year is indicated on it, so is 1992) and that is why I have a blank data plate perhaps.
Thanks

There are repo data tags available. Someone posted John Bizal's web address earlier, he's a good guy to deal with. midwestmilitary.com i think it is.
Whenever i had to get info from painted over data tags i just threw them into a stripper. The plates are punched with the info so you wont lose it, just the paint on the tag. You can also drill out the rivets and look on the inside of the tag, if it wasnt punched too lightly you can get the numbers that way also.
Some of you guys may find that the vin "serial" number is also stenciled on as the military used them at times for their registration numbers.(USA # ) This number would be on the back panel.

No updates, been slammed with work, work, and more work. Right now it's doing a fine job holding the driveway down at my Mom's house (I live in an apartment, I keep my toys there). With the Egg in the driveway (travel trailer), the M416 backed up to it (with the tail of the trailer running over the tongue since it's tall) and the 416 hooked up to the big Jeep I have about four inches to spare in the driveway!
Pretty soon here I'm going to pressure wash it and toss some rattle can paint on it. I have to do some paper work and then hit the DMV to get it titled / plated, the fresh paint will help me there (titling it as a custom build, should make it a lot easier).
Gotta have it ready to roll by early May for a run.
Oh, and Zoro - I'd love a picture of the plate. Thanks.

You know Scott I was looking around and from what I've seen the M416A1 (Surge Brakes) fram did not have the center support span (perhaps to make up for added weight from brakes?). So I'm thinking maybe your frame is from an A1. The lunette area is bolted onto the A frame so maybe somebody changed out the A1 for the regular 416.

I was at a state auction where they had several M416 trailers. Happened to get pictures of two data plates. There's a guy selling blank repro data plates on ebay. Looks like you could get one of those, stamp something reasonable and get it registered if that's part of the question.
Sorry if the pictures are a bit large but it's easier to read the numbers that way.

We're actually planning to feature a cover story in our August/September issue on the use of one of these trailers on a 1948 Willys Jeep that will go cross-country from Georgia to Arizona. The remaining '1948' miles will be travelled on Route 66 with the whole lead-in to the story being 'America's Legendary Vehicle on America's Legendary Highway'. Check out the link below, it's gonna be sweet and any/all of you with one of these trailers who are available should join!
