transfer case swap

I have a 89 4.0 with the ba10 5 speed. I need to replace the transfer case. I can get one real cheap from a 96 with an auto. Will this interchange? Tanks in advance!

Depends on your 10/5's output spline count.

Or you could just swap in an Ax15 and a tcase, kill 2 birds with one stone.



Yea, that thought crossed my mind. Had a wrecked wrangler lined up but the deal fell through.
Is there a way of finding out what the spline count is without ripping it apart? Maybe by date code on the case or build date of the XJ? I haven't even seen my
