1) I just got my 96 back from the Dealership who replaced the Catalytic Converter under factory recall. Two days later, I hear a rattling underneath so I take a look and here's what I see - this does not look new to me. Under recall, is the factory supposed to give me a NEW converter or replace it with something that they think is good?

2) I notice a small hole here in my Exhaust shown here on the end near the bottom...is this something I need to change soon or can it wait? When I do replace, is this easily done or is there welding involved?

Thanks to all your help as I get to know my new XJ. I just change the Serp belt and while that may seem simple (so many here are experts), I was giddy when it was succesfully completed - anyone remember the excitement of their first fix?!

The small hole in the muffler is a drain hole for moisture. Its supposed to be there.

Supposed to be new, and by fed. law they can't charge you for ANYTHING involved with its replacement. http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/warr95fs.pdf

I took mine in, but it was OK. I asked if they were going to replace it right then and was told that they would need to order one in for it. I was also informed that they ususally want to replace the pipe from the exhaust manifold, but I would have to pay extra for that.

Are you sure that they did not need to order it and then setup another trip? They did reprogram my car's brain for the new emmissions.

But yes, it looks as if it was not replaced to me either. Give them a call, but be nice about it.

As Anthropy said, be nice and act like you dont know whats going on. Ask if they replaced it or fixed it or what they did. It hasnt been replaced. Did they give you any paperwork? If so what does it say. Maybe they checked it and determined its ok. If its ok and they replace it, I would think they have to answer to Chrysler warr. rep.

I took it in on Sunday night, got a call on Monday saying that they did need to replace it, that they needed to order the part and that it would be ready on Tuesday. On Tuesday I got a call that it was ready and picked it up as you see it. I find it hard to be nice to the dealership when they seem to rip people so often. But in order to get my stuff fixed correctly I have to be nice. Catch 22.

I would also make it a point to get in touch (via phone) with Chrysler Corporate and inform them of the poor practices of this dealership. You might not get very far, but you wouln't get anywhere if you don't try.

As far as being nice, if they were supposed to replace it per a recall and did not do it, I would probably go the hell off on them. Its one thing to go in there from the beginning with an attitude, put when you put your trust in them and they fail you from the get go, all bets are off now.

did you get a recipt that says it was replaced? If so call back and ask to talk with the service manager and pass along the info, most places would love to know that they have a tech not doing the work and writing it up as done. Also wouldn't hurt to follow up with corp as well. But they will tell you the computer is down, blah, blah, blah, call back later when the non-English speeking employees are at the phones.

This isn't chrysler service related, but the local toyota/GM dealership is very stubborn and wont do warranty work on vehicles they dont sell often so one of the guys I work with sent toyota a letter and very quickly got a call from the local dealership trying to bend over backwards to help him out now. The dealership was threatened by toyota corp that they were going to loose their dealership if they didn't help my co-worker with his warranty work.
Chrysler may not be the same but I think it would be worth a shot.

The receipt I have indicates that the catalytic converter was bad and that they replaced it with a new one per factory recall. Clearly this is false. I will be speaking with a service manager from Tyson's Corner Jeep, Vienna, Virginia in the AM and hopefully they will handle this correctly.

I would be sure to have a printed copy of the pic. you posted here available with the date printed on it as well as a printed copy of the federal law when you confront the dealership. They CANNOT, by federal law, put a used or old catalytic converter on your vehicle. If they give you a hard time about it, I would simply tell them that you have pictures of the work done and a copy of what federal law mandates they do to rectify the situation and let them sweat it from there. It may end up being a pain in the arse, but you will win because the law is on your side. If worse comes to worse, post all of the transactions on a personal website and send them the link. Let them know that you will include that link in every e-mail you send out as well as word of mouth. I had to go that route with my dealership a few years ago regarding some items they used as selling points that turned out to crap out less than ten days after the sale. They gave in, and they actually held an all-company meeting regarding the effect the internet could have on their future sales due to the website I posted that even had audio clips of the salesmen trying to weasel their ways out of rectifying things.

Call your local District Attorney. What you are dealing with is fraud. They will be happy to help.
