Anyone have a P89 or P95 Ruger 9mm? I'm thinking about buying a 9mm and these are 2 of the ones I'm going to go look at....any comments or suggestions??? Keep in mind I have a budget of about 500.

I have a P89, definetly a rugged gun, fairly accurate, but it's hard not to be with 9MM! I've put about 400 rounds through the barrel and it's in good shape. You can buy replacement springs for better recoil control. I like my P89, but with 500.00 you can get into a Glock or Spingfield XD which are both better shooters IMO. They're lighter and have more accessories available and just as dependable. I got my P89 w/ case and extra clip used for 350.00.

I'll have to look into the others I guess. I just started my quest for information a couple days ago...we shall see.
On a side note, this is your first post on a Jeep forum and your talking about guns....only in Texas!!! :D

IMO the best pistol is the one that fits your hand and that you shoot well with. One that fits well, will often shoot better than one that has the fancy sights, trigger work and other bells and whistles. Kind of like running shoes, if they don't fit, they aren't going to perform well, irregardless if they look neat or you can pump up the soles.
Second criteria is just how robust it is. I can likely use my Browning Hi Power or my P7 as a hammer and not really do much damage to them. I don't really know if the quality is the same, but my old P7/9 was daily carry (back up) for nearly 20 years and I still can't detect any obvious wear and tear.
Go shoot various pistols, see what feels good.
A whole lot of people that flocked to Glock, are buying something else now. The Ruger looks like a P7 clone (though the grip angle appears to be little off), the P7/13, has grip too large for many people (me included and I'm XL with big hands). Nice to have the extra bullets, but it's often more important that it fits and shoots well.
Another thing, that often gets overlooked is what kind of ammo you are planning on shooting. Not every auto will reliably feed a hollow point, some are load finicky.

Well in my defense, I just became a member and I have been mostly reading up and trying to get some good information...but point taken:D
The P89 is a great gun for the money. I totally agree about the feel of the gun in your hand, realtive to accuracy and safety. I mentioned the Springfield XD because I love the feel and the trigger safety. I don't run a lot accessories, but I do like a built-in light rail. It's nice in the middle of the night, I or someone..is always misplacing the flashlight, but the gun is always in the same spot.
Guns are like Jeeps, fun but expensive and trust me once you get comfortable with the 9MM, you'll want a .40cal, then .45cal...2" lift, 3.5", 8"LA:thumbup:
Go Longhorns!

I have a P944. 40 S&w, great gun reliable but unless you got meathooks like me and the REV try one first, they are slight larger than the norm. My wife hates it but she can shot like heck with a Glock 19

I have the P89 as well... feels like a solid gun and fits my hand just right. I'd say it's quite accurate as well.

Those series Rugers are my least favorite alongside Walther P99s. They might be reliable, but they're the most uncomfortable pieces of shit I've ever handled.

Take a look at Steyr MA1 9mm. It shoots real nice, is very comfortable and has rather unique sites. It also fits your budget.

I've owned two P95s. Sold them both. Decent guns, but they just didn't do if for me. Of course, if your budget is $500 you can look for something a little more upscale used. I got my Kimber Custom Classic 1911 with tons of bells and whistles (4 Mcormick mags, Dillon bag, extended mag well & button etc) for 5 bills. But I was certainly in the right place at the right time that day.

Yeah 500 pretty much leaves it wide open. You can get good used Sig for 350-450 easily and even new Sig or HK for around 5.
See what fits. I don't like the fit of Glocks, Walthers, Rugers or 1911 (actually I don't like 1911 period). I do know the walther you have to keep clean otherwise it will have FTE/FTF problems.

I used to have a P89. Absolutely hated the trigger pull. Long, grainy, inconsistent, and no real way to improve it. What I've got now has about a 3-4 lb. glass break trigger, albeit MUCH more expensive. It's also a target piece, not for self defense or any other purpose.
But by all means, get one that fits YOU. Don't get yourself locked into this, that, or the other thing only mentality. You'll be much better off with something that fits you and you're comfortable with.

I like my p99. It fits my hand perfect. The only thing I dont like about it is no mechanical safety. The only real safety feature about it is when its "de-cocked" the trigger is heavy and fairly long.

Belgian Browning P35 High Power is an older design, but it's a sweet 9mm pistol!
