I keep getting asked... What are you working on ? So here's the story -

The jeeps getting a slight overhall. Planning an Exo Cage, which includes rocker replacements and some major weight loss to help compensate the weight gain from the tubing. Also replacing my worn out 33's finally. I'll add some updates as I go along.

here's what i've accomplished so far -

Roof rack and all the rails are removed
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/downsize_1.jpg

Sliders removed and ready for the cut out replacements
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/downsize_2.jpg

Started removing the interior this weekend also. While i was busy replacing the center pins on the rear leaf springs, I let my youngest daughter loose with a screw driver. I was amazed at how far she got on her own.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/downsize_3.jpg

Also was pleasantly surprised at how clean and rust free the rear deck was after the carpet was pulled.
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/downsize_4.jpg

I'll update more when I make a lil more progress...

Normally people go with an Exo because they have this belief (ya right :lecture:) that it will protect the body in the case of a roll over. In your case I assume from the photo that you are more concerned with protecting the stickers, correct? :D

Good choice on the replacements. Can I recommend you also consider cutting out the bottom of the doors at the same time and building "mini boatsides".

My ultimate goal here is -
A. personal protection for me and the kids (seats and harnesses are also in the works)
B. protect my investment - I (knock on wood) don't have any cracks in the unibody yet, or any other major structural damage as of yet. so tieing everything together for strength and longevity is now or never IMO. (I know it is not bullet proof)
C. protect as many stickers as possible !!

the boat sides are actually on the drawing board already :D. We are looking at plating the frame as much as possible before hand and doing boatsides is not much more work... we have been discussing cutting the doors / ditching the doors all together... so we'll see where it ends up.

Nice to see you got some work done after Erin & I left. Bet your pretty excited, sounds like your going to be doing alot of cool stuff. Have yet to see a XJ in person with boat sides. Can I hire your daughter to work on my Jeep? Maybe she can teach my girlfriend!

Sounds like you have your priorities right. Since your doing seats and harnesses are you doing a inside roll bar/shoulder bar behind the front seats and or rear seat?

looking forward to seeing the outcome.

Update-

finished ripping out the headliner this weekend. nothing to spectacular.
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/rockers.jpg

Monday, Karl helped me cut out the rockers and welded in some chunks of 2X6 3/16. We cut as high as possible, which meant a lil fab on the doors was needed.
http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/rockers4.jpg

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx71/mojojojo2010/Misc%20stuff/rockers2.jpg

This also changed my thoughts on the boatsides / mini boatsides. We'll see where it ends up. I wont be reinforcing / bracing them untill the cage work begins.

didnt get any finished pictures. I was grinding the doors as fast as i could in order to make it to work on time. I'll take some more this weekend along with the door mods as well.

My part of the show is done and it's all Rod now. He still has some attachments to be made to the pseudo subframe area. The door are just rough cut to get him on the road since time ran short. I see he is looking for some replacement to get rid of the power window weight. I would like to look at it again to see about putting some angle iron sections below the tube to attach it to the frame area adjacent to it. I would only do it at the pillar areas though.

His friend showed up and they went to town with the grinders and made these look like they were there from the factory ! Very impressive ! (i'll get a finished pic tomorow)

Here is the front frame stiffiners. We decided rather than mess with fabbing around the bumper, we'd just tie that in to them as well as the track bar mount. Needless to say the bumper wont be going anywhere for a LONG time http://www.naxja.org/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Long story short, Mother Nature's a bitch ! After fighting the rain and slight breeze all day yesterday, and about 2 hours of prep / rust removal, i finally got some paint on the tube. Most of it turned out o.k., but the wind kept kicking up blowing the plastic into it making a major mess of things. Today after unwrapping it and getting it outside I found all kinds of spots i missed and that need touching up etc... (painting tube sucks!) Decided to call it a weekend though and brought it home to the cozy dry garage. Next weekend i'll attempt to fix it and get the bedliner done as well.

Well, some of you have heard my plans for the top... the brown truck came today :spin1:

I have my patterns all made and cut to size.

UPS delivered me 3 yards of black boat vynal this morning. There was supposed to be 1 yard of clear 30mic vynal for the rear window, but of course they screwed up and sent another yard of the black. oh well, shouldn't slow me down to bad...

http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/mojo2010PTII/Misc/1005101503.jpg

http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/mojo2010PTII/Misc/001.jpg

the plan is basically snaps around the top portion and possibly one snap on each of the four corners of the bed rails. then 1/4" bungee thru grommets along the sides (bed rails), hooked over the sides and tail gate for easy quick access to tools and gear. My theory is that the bungee cord will also help reduce the stretching and tearing from the weather. The rear window size is yet to be determined... but will be somewhere around 15X48 ish, and only the top will be sewn on. the sides and bottom will have 1" velcro, so it can be easily opened and rolled up.

I'm sure it will end up being a saggy mess when it's done, since its my first attempt at anything like this, but it looks really cool in my head :dunce:

I'll update a bit more when the rest of my goodies show up and i start making some progress...

 Mojo

The edges have a 1" seam all the way around... its actually VERY strong. I took a sample and just did one traight seam accross it and it took a full strength pull to rip it apart. The vinyl is super strong and the thread is really tough also. My fear is the stitch length is really short in a few spots (cause i suck) those will deff be the weak links.

Ill get some pics of the back side so it makes a lil more sense.

after a very long very stressfull weekend, you can finally start to see the finished product. Had a ton of issues with the damn machine, so excuse the crappy stitch work.

The vinyl window. Velcro on all for sides so it can be completely removed.
http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/mojo2010PTII/Misc/001-2.jpg

This is what it will look like from the outside with the window in. Sewed in some heavy gauge wire (like coat hanger stuff) for the window frame, so it holds the shape.

Yup :banghead: but the way the tube is that frames the roof, there wasn't much of a choice.

I'm open to suggestions for round 2. I have enough vinyl to redo it, but i figured i'd give it some time and see what actually happens first, then try and improve on it...
You ask here I go, first of all it looks great, but.......:lecture: have you ever seen the rail a bikini top slides into on the windshield frame for a Jeep CJ series. I know some of the younger crowd didn't know there were Jeeps before the XJ.:gag: Well anyway it acts as a wind/rain seal and you can buy the rail by the foot, at least as I remember when I made a bikini top for my Bronco. Keep up the good work. You could always just silicone the crap out of it.:scared:

X2... I think it looks great!! I was thinking a soft top rail system, Im sure with the roof rails it may be a little difficult to work around, but Im sure with you mad skills you will have no problem figuring out how to make something work so you are closer to your "waterproof" goal:)

You might need to fab some rain/wind deflectors similar to those that you put on windows - like the one on the back window in this picture.

Try looking at the boating stores like West Marine - you might find something there. Awesome work, by the way!

I thought about the CJ rail system, but didn't look into it... oops ! hind sight...

For the rear I'd say have the buttons under the roof with bands or strips of material going on the top to hold everything tight, maybe made with a strong elastomer so it can be really tight? Maybe a hook end rather than button?

Just some thoughts.

Rod,

It looks awsome. You should be very proud of yourself, that is an impressive first attempt. You can see why having these custom made is expensive!!

The soft top idea (or front of a truck tonnoue cover) is exactly what I would have done for both water intrusion and wind noise. As an alternative I would at least double the number of clasps on the top edge.
