I was looking at ordering a set of JCR stage 1 rock sliders soon, the only problem is they come unfinished. My question is what's a good durable paint to use on them? I want to avoid re-spraying them all the time, touch up now and then is to be expected, I just don't want to have to take them off every spring to re-coat.

X2

YOU CAN BUY THE DO-IT-YOURSELF STUFF AND SAVE SOME MONEY. IT IS DURABLE ALSO.

As much as I have scratched up my sliders in the short time I've had them, nothing better than $.99 Walmart flat black :)

Does anyone have any experience with Hammer-rite? Is it any good? Plain black may be easier to touch up...

Whatever you decide, PREP is the key. Nothing will stick right if you don't prep the sliders first.

Use some kind of solvent to get grease, wax, buildup off. Prime them with an etching primer. Then paint. Rattle cans or herc over bare metal poorly prepped won't stick well.

Thanks, I think I'll try the Bedliner idea, didn't know about the solvent or "etching" primer thing. Good advise, thanks guys!

Here some info given to me. I have used it with good results.
Prep is the key. Then what ever color you like on top. The satin blick look a lot like power coating. But flat is easy to find and a bit cheaper.

You can also use a rust converter to inhibit rust once you have clean off the old rust. Use the the rust fix before the primer.

Self Etching primer is what I use, use several light coats, let dry to touch between coats and then coat with finish when completely dry per instructions.

I used this when I refinished a used bumper and it is holding up well.
I will use it on my rock rails when I feel the neeed to cover the scratches.

Why don't you have Jeremy make you some sliders? They will probably be cheaper and they will definitely be better. I bet he'll even paint them for you. Keep it local.

If he ever chimes in here, I may have a small project I'd like some help with-

Do you have a bender Jeremy?

Not to go against the crowd here but I would advise against doing anything in bed liner that is going to rub up against rocks.

I have heard a lot of people who have used it on bumpers and it does come off. Then its hard to touch up.

A can of flat black rattlecan paint is the answer.

I'll second that. Ive seen a few sliders with liner that has peeled off. It's ugly.
For something that is ment to take the abuse and samve the rest of the jeep keep is simple.

Thanks for the PM Chris/Ryan, think I'll try rattle can the first go around, and see how they hold up. General consensus seems to be the that good prep is key, and that no matter what the top coat is it's going to see some abuse, and come off to some extent. At least paint is easier to blend than thicker bedliner or even powdercoat. I'll check out Jeremy's site, and send him a PM, sounds like he does quality work, and I don't mind spending my $ local. Thanks. :)

Yes, I have a Tube bender,.

And Buss, just use cheap paint, I call it the 2.99 wound, cause that what it cost's to fix it when you scrape it up.. DON"T use bedliner!

Have any of you ever thought to try a military grade casmoline coating at least on the bottom? It is great at corrosion protection, even on bare steel versus salt and snow...and can be sprayed or brushed on. It can even be painted over.

I use to package an aerosol version of it 20 years ago here and it was incredible stuff. I used to coat battery post/clamps, and exposed rusting underbody metal parts to stop the rust and corrosion for years. I sold it to companies that stored used machinery outdoors, like industrial crane or gas compressor and turbine junk yards. All it took was about 2-3 mill coat to get 3-5 years of outdoor rust protection. It was totally water proof, and could be removed with a good paint solvent like laquer thinner.

One of the nice things about it was that it was grease based, never peeled off in chunks like paint does. It did dry to hard coating.
