Are you happy with the Mosin? I was going to pick one up at a gun show a couple months back...decided against it though (just couldn't make up my mind). They're very reasonable (most under $100).

i love it with one exception, ammo. i like to shoot at an indoor range and they dont allow any ammo with a ferrous projectile (steel penetrator) for some reason the city next door dont like it when rounds come IN to their city. they have enough going through the city, so whats a few more? well the soft tips that i used to get are on backorder. the only ammo the shop carrys is surplus. i still need to sight in the scope.
the kick is something to get used to. reminds me of when i qualled the M60 and M240B after a day with the mosin. i love shooting it but my little sister, 15, refuses to fire it for fear of getting nocked on her butt.
payed $89+tax (no BCI fee per CCW) and couldnt be happier. plus you can find the accessories for pretty cheap, sling, oiler can, take down tool, ammo pouch etc.

I get a kick out of shooting large caliber weapons. I hear the 7.62X54 is a hell of a round (the ammo looks cheap too). The guns i saw weren't in the best of shape...i think if i found one in great condition i'll pick one up eventually. Most of their guns (some carbine and some long rifle) were anywhere between $89-119.

Premium® Expanding Full Metal Jacket
An ideal choice for agencies that don't permit hollow point ammunition, this revolutionary barrier-penetrating design
combines a scored full metal nose over an internal rubber tip that collapses on impact. It never fills with barrier material and assures expansion on every shot. A lead core at the base maintains weight retention.
courtesey http://www.federalpremium.com/default.asp?menu=1&s1=7
i was wondering what to carry for some time. for a short while i carried reminton +P+ hollow point. i seen two rounds that went through some walls-one just dry wall and the other drywall, stud, and carpet. it was recoved from under the carpet. neither had ANY expantion at all!
my CCW instructor suggested i check these out. from a little research i did they do not have a reputation for over penetration like most other 9mm defence rounds. as soon as the projectile hits resistance, the expantion process starts. the metal jacket starts expanding and compresses the rubber plug at the nose of the round. once that is compressed, the lead follower completes the process expanding out more. this round does not rely on soft tissue to cause the round to expand. good thing is that it will expand and loose energy when it encounters objects like drywall and masonary and soft tissue reducing overpenetration.
less chance of your round going through bad Mr Attempted Murderer, your living and dinning room and into your neibors bedrooom as can happen with other 9mm rounds.
STATS
muzzle 25yds 50yds
Velocity (fps) 1230 1160 1110
energy (ft-lbs) 350 315 285
i forget what the actual expation rate is.

ok, fine. i will just lug a couple shot guns arround for personal defence.
when your the victim of a violent offence by an armed individual im sure you'd wish someone was there with a gun to help you out. it just so happens handguns are the easiest for the good guys to conceal.
for that reason i carry. not that i was a vic, but my wife was. i happened to be in the middle east at the time and the most i could do to comfort her after the cops left was to tell her on the phone to get over to her dads house and to give herself a big hug. i vowed "NEVER AGAIN". soon as we have some more $$, (maybe a christmas present) she will be carrying too (she just turned 21).

for those of you with the XD 45-
how is it to conceal. any harder than an other large frame pistol?
hows the recoil?- my wife WILL have to shoot it if only to familiarize herself with it.
hows the weight? i dont want my pants to sag down at one side.
availablity of holsters? good bad or fair?
any problems thus far- feeding, cycling, drawing etc?
im thinking the XD 45 may be my next carry weapon within a year or two. something with a bit more stopping power than a 9mm and still able to carry a decent ammount of ammo.

Stewie,
My XD is the Tactical model (5inch barrel). I didn't really buy it for concealed carry. So far it has fed ammo perfectly. No problems yet, but I've also only used ball ammo so far. As far as weight goes, It is pretty light compared to my govt model 1911. Of course when loaded with 14 rounds it gets heavier. I enjoy shooting it, but since it is a light weight .45 the perceived recoil (to me) is more than my 1911. I like the weight of my 1911 it helps tame some of that recoil. Really with the XD, it's not bad it's just a little more noticable than my 1911, especially during rapid fire.
I don't think it's too heavy or large to carry consealed though. I'm sure the smaller frame variants will be easy to conceal. I'm not sure about holster availability. This is mine:
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d19/dannyp69/Lead%20delivery%20systems/XDHolster.jpg
I picked this up from TAPCO. Bought this becase it will hold the gun with or without the light under the barrel.

I carry .40 SC and based on that one I think that the part that's probably going to be worst to conceal is the grip. What I am eyeing right now is the newest XD http://springfield-armory.com/prod-xdpstl-compact.shtml I talked with somene who shot one and he said the grip is perfect comfort wise and the shortened grip makes it also extremely easy for concealment.
Anyways, holsters.... look into crossbread and and c-tac (if you're looking for IWB). And sagging the pants... the key is a good belt. That makes or breaks the holster (kind of like an antenna makes or breaks the CB radio reception).

Get some leather or what I think is called moleskin and glue it to the back of the holster so that the grip and tail of the gun does not dig directly into your body (unless you're wearing an undershirt).

My USP is just too big to carry on my slight frame (150 lbs soaking wet), so I think I've made up my mind on one of these. It's a .45 which I prefer, and for a smaller piece it has decent capacity of 10 rounds.

I think while I'm at it I'm going to pick up a little sister to my M1. All my buddies have ARs and I want a .223 rifle also, just not an AR. My solution:

This is next in line for me:
My USP is just too big to carry on my slight frame (150 lbs soaking wet), so I think I've made up my mind on one of these. It's a .45 which I prefer, and for a smaller piece it has decent capacity of 10 rounds.

i used to think sig was a good gun, recently a friend of mine had a p220 blow up in his hands. split the case right at the base. somehow the gun fired out of battery. it blew out the mag and split the frame just above the trigger gaurd. he called sig and was basiclly told to kiss thier a$$. he sent samples of the ammo to the manufacturerer (speer) and was quickly returned a test report that showed everything was right. he sent this to sig along with the gun and ask them to tell him what went wrong. they never responded. he again called them and was told "i don't know what to tell you" . after checking several gunsmiths he found out that sig and wilson combat are the worst for warranty repairs. he has since bought a springfield xd45 and loves it. another thought is, have you thought about an hk compact? that is what i carry everyday and love the way it performs. just a thought. i'm sure sig is still good quality but i would not buy anything from a gun maker that won't stand behind thier products.
