View Full Version : A how to wheel meet
mrmikey32
March 8th, 2010, 16:14
So, I was very happy to attend winterfest for the first time. It was even my first time wheeling ever too.
So, I know that this discussion came up in the winterfest thread, but I would love to see it happen.
Maybe its possible to put a meet together to teach people(like me) the basics of wheeling. Such things as gears to use(im manual), how to recover people, how to use a winch properly, how to strap to trees, how to do basic trail fixes, how to do the hole clear thing when over a hill, and I am sure that I missing things.
I am just tossing this idea out there, but I would love to do this.
Maybe even offer an advanced course too.

This is a great idea and I would like to see it come together. After we get through the rest of our Winterfest dealings etc, I would be in favor of seeing something like this come together. Date and location to be determined at a later time.

The local Sports car club puts on a yearly "How to autocross" Course. It is an evening of class room instruction.
Something like that would be the bee's knees.

i'd be more than willing to help w this. i'd bring my dd that has a bb, open f&r and wheel it. i enjoy seeing the faces of people when they realize that their jeep, and themselves, can do it.

I like this idea too! I just went with the flow this time and prayed I did everything right. I was going to ask for someone to ride with me but I am way to shy to ask. I hope no one thought I was being snobby or anything I am just extremely shy.

Like when you told us to stop laughing at your XJ sticker on your fuel door :D we didn't think you were being snobby
it looked like you handled the trails very well
i had no idea what i was doing when i first met up with a NAXJA group but one guy just kept saying "just drive up that rock" "just drive up that hill" and thats kinda my mind set
in our group a couple people would have been fine it they just stuck the skinny pedal down :D

They'd have been fine if you didn't hammer it through a mudhole and toast their alternators. I was that guy at WF09!

I would be willing to ride with a newb and help them out. I was always out of my jeep on the trails this past winterfest trying to help as many people as I could. I bet I could do even more if I wasn't wheelin.

haha, heavy foot is how i ended up on two wheels against a tree when i was young. so where would this happen, is there any wooded areas in between chicago and milwaukee for wheelin' ive asked around but to my understanding everything has been leveled for housing plans.
HaleYes
March 9th, 2010, 14:52
I don't see the need.
Looks like 95% of the folks interested already know it all.
I mean after all, 1-2 wheeling trips is all it takes to know what you're doing.
:D
If this happens it needs to be taught by the old-timers of the MWC.

This is a GREAT idea! I've only been wheeling for about 2 years. Out on the trails 10-15 times, and I can guarentee that I still dont have the knowledge of it all.
I still consider myself a newb. There are sooooo many more people in the talented group of NAXJA that know soooo much more than I do. And if there were to be one of these "Training"/ "Learning" events I would absolutely be there!

that would be interesting. I knw a few people were amazed in the quarry when I bypassed the stock fan relay. Simple things like relay pinouts and such are good basic knowledge to have.
Maybe something that can be done around the campfire, rather than taking up wheeling time during the day.

Luckily we had a person in our afternoon Green trail group that knew which pins to jump to get the electric fan to stay on. We used it to keep mrmikey's truck cool the rest of the trail..........until the ghost rock that ripped into his gas tank. Then it was all down stream from then on......literaly :eyes:

XJosh95
March 12th, 2010, 14:12
Either way, its gotta be bled. If you use a box end instead of open end on the bleeders, you're more likely to crack them open without snapping or rounding them off. Even if you replace everything, you'll need to bleed the system to get the air out. It usually takes a buddy and a six-pack each.

believe me, I know what it's like to have a damaged fuel tank...
I like to use a socket to crack open the bleeders for the first time. A deep well goes a long way towards not stripping them.

I would love a newb training day, I could use it! Heck, even if there was someone in iowa that wanted to go wheelin for a day somewhere and show me the ropes I would be grateful, I would like to get some experience before next winterfest.
For brake bleeders I like to place a socket over the bleeder then tap all around the sides of the socket with a hammer to get them broken loose. The socket protects the bleeder from damage and allows you to smack it just a little harder. I have also put a small piece of dry ice on the tip of the bleeder for just a bit to shrink it a bit then soaked it with penetrating oil and gotten it loose.

How about this:
There will be a trail cleanup at Redbird announced soon. After the trail work (it goes really quick) I will be more then happy to spend some time instructing those interested on wheeling, safety, recovery, and basic first aid.
The best part? As part of the clean up, your Redbird entry is free! Of course I will not charge to instruct you, and the campground is really nice.
