View Full Version : Bumper Build

Here guys and gals... I built this bumper for a customer over the weekend. He is a friend of Jarrads (thanks for the referral by the way) and I think he's on here too, but I don't know his user name. Anyway, just thought I would share for all to see, let me know what you think!

Before paint, after everything is somewhat welded, still had to weld the backs of some things, easier to do after taking it off before painting.

Then a couple coats of primer and paint and after 24 hours of drying time, I finally got to put it back on. Here you go:

how much would a bumper like that run? ball park..
how about one like that but with the winch on top instead of recessed?
How about one like that but non winch but with a 2" receiver instead?

just curious.

Unfortunately, right now I am not shipping any bumpers. I am wanting to get a non running (free) cherokee to use as a jig to build things off of, but no such deal has arisen yet. Until that happens, I really don't have any way to build bumpers b/c I don't have a jig for them.

I will send out PMs with pricing info.

What size tube did you use?

is there a way to clearcoat raw steel and keep that look but protect it from rusting? i think a grey jeep with a raw steel exocage basket rack and bumpers would look killer!

Old Navy's fixtures are done that way in thier stores.

That's a good looking bumper. I do think it would look better with the winch top mounted instead.

What size tube did you use?

The large tube is 1 3/4", and the small is 1". For those of you that think top mounted is better, that is no problem at all to do, all it requires is for me to move the winch plate to the top of the frame plates instead of putting it at the bottom like it is here. However, this is what the customer wanted, so that is what he got, and he is extremely happy with it. So happy, in fact, that he is bringing the jeep back on Monday so I can build a rear bumper and do rocker replacements.

You have any shots of the build up of the bumper? Like is it out of plate welded together? Or is it plate bent and welded up? OR is it peices of tube welded up?

Glenn, it is really a combo of everything... The main front is 2x4x1/8 rectangular tubing. And the side pieces under the fenders are 2x2x1/8. The rest, as in the filler plates below the headlights, the winch pate, and the frame plates are 1/4" A572 plate.

I do have a few shots of the bumper build-up, but they are not loaded onto the PC or into Photobucket for that matter, but if you guys want to see them I can do that.

looks a lot like the nates4x4 slimline recessed winch bumper i got...did u go with the 1/8th to cut down on weight?

Team Willys
March 8th, 2010, 18:56
1/8th is all that is needed, everything is gusseted and well engineered so it works fine. Its not gonna bend under any normal abuse. Now, hit an oak tree at 70... and it might bend, but you're gonna be dead so it wont matter! lol.

And Greg, your Nates is 1/8th tube. Jarrad has the same one as you. And, as a matter of fact, it is kinda supposed to look like the nates as that is what the customer wanted. However, mine uses more attachment points, has the correct spacing for the frame plates (Jarrad's was like 1/2" too wide???) and also has 1" more ground clearance than a comparable Nates, so while they do look similar, my design does have its benefits over theirs.

i just finished cutting down the mounts on my nates cuz the dang thing sticks out so far...yea the front is 1/8th on mine, one of the things i dont like about it. i even had to add a few welds cuz he forgot on mine ha.

So your Nates Bumper was junk too huh??? Lol, Doesn't surprise me that he missed some stuff. Jarrad's was different from side to side by a lot. Like on one side the welds were ground smooth and on the other they were not??? Weird. This one has extra gussets that you can't see (They are under and behind) to help make it stronger.

the fit was good on the mounts on mine, but he forgot one weld. mine is cut down now so ive got better approach angle, and i fully welded everything (more than he did). still, for the price i paid i couldnt beat it. at the time i bought i had never welded anything before ha.

Love it guys!

Great fab work. Just curious how do the D-ring tabs mount?

PM a price for one picked up if youre gonna make more

Team Willys
March 13th, 2010, 19:07
The D-ring tabs go all the way through the tube and are welded on the front and the back (back is rosette welded).

As of right now, I am not shipping or building bumpers unless I have the Jeep they are going on to build it off of. I don't have a Cherokee to build off of, so there is no way for me to build one and know that it will fit correctly. However, I can usually complete one within 3 days (takes a day for paint to cure usually, and I remove and sand it all before paint. So... the paint has to be dry before I can put it back on).
