2 door rear 1/4 glass removal.

I'm considering swapping my glass out for the older rear 1/4 glass, the one that opens. Mine is a 97 and it looks as if they are interchageable with the pre 97's. Has anyone here been successful in removing the glass? If so any info on this would be appreciated, Thanks

this is a pic I found that shows what I'm talking about.

It is basically a rubber gasket that surrounds the window. It is really simple.

Do you have a donor vehicle?

I had a heck of a time locating a set of hinges for one of mine.

That link is for hatch glass but I basically used the same method to do my side glass (I did the non-vent to vent swap in my '93 2 door).

I used a screwdriver to get the glass out, and used soapy twine instead of the nylon cord. Only issue I had is that in a couple areas the twine actually cut into the rubber gasket as I was pulling it. It never caused any problems, no leaks or anything, just have some cuts and a couple small chunks missing in the inside of the gasket.

Edit: Heres the "how to" that I followed, I just used glass instead of lexan

Ya, that whole is exhaust.

I used two pry bars to get my both my rear windows out of my '99 2 door when I parted it out.

Thanks for the links. think I can do this as long as I take more than one screw driver and a socket set to the salvage yard.

yeah, it's not all that bad. I saw the vent windows in the JY and did it w/o even looking up how to get it done. I just kinda started prying with 2 or 3 flathead screwdrivers. Just work your way around it and you should be fine.

now... ive never seen one of these windows up close to inspect so ive got a few questions:

- is the part of the wondow that opens up housed around its perimiter or is the strut running vertically the only peice outside of the glass? (sorry, this may be a bit of an odd question. im just curious as to how it is supported.)
- will the glass from a donor jeep simply fit into the seal on my existing 2 door or will i have to salvage the one from the donor jeep? (or by a new one if need be, i understand that there will need to be some adhesive applied.)
