You either have a Dana 35 or a chrystler 8.25 (27 spline). The dana 35 only came on xj's with ABS brakes. If you do not have abs then you have the 8.25. By site the 8.25 is very round and a shallow divit where the fill plug is where-as the dana 35 is more oval and has a deep/large divit for the fill plug.

The 35 came in my 94 non abs up country sport. I am pretty sure the 35 was standard equippment before 95, 95 and on the 8.25 was standard, from what i have seen. 87 the d44 was standard, or at least very common. One easy way to tell the 44 is that it is not oval shaped like the 35 and uses a metal threaded fill plug with a square head, you need a big adjustable wrench to take it out. the 35's i believe you need a 3/8ths ratched to insert into it and i know the 8.25 is a rubber plug you just pull out. hope that helps a little

You need to regear both axles to the same ratio. Order the gears from randys, also the master rebuild kit. Your stock gears should be 3:55's or maybe 3:73's, you are going to need new carriers for both axles if the rear is a D35, if the rear axle is an 8.25 then the carrier is the same. If you are going to build it you might want to add a traction device in the rear diff, something like an Auburn pro limited slip, Detroit locker, ARB air locker, etc. Those replace the carrier.
So, based on a D30 and 8.25 you will need front gears and carrier, master rebuild kit in the front, for the rear, gears, rebuild kit, choice of traction device.
If it's a D35 in the back you will need gears, carrier, master kit. I think thats about it, might as well do the traction device so you only have to take it apart once rather than paying to have it done twice.

It could possibly throw off the speedometer a bit too.
After you regear, run around with a GPS and see how far it is out.
When you find out how far it's off, you can order the correct speedo gear to correct it and keep law enforcement off your butt.

thanks for the usefull info, don't need to worry about changing the speedo gear and law enforcement.
police don't care about speed limit in indonesia, we can step on the gas pedal as deep as we want without getting caught.
