They are sayin Santa Monica will only be 3.5' so you will probly see it but it won't damage anything. My son (Juryrigjalopy) is in Chile right now and is ok......SANTA

Glad to hear your son's safe, Santa!!
Yeah, it was an 8.8 early this a.m. in Chile. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100227/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_chile_earthquake. Hawaii's on Tsunami alert (sirens & everything) with any waves due to hit them about 1:15pm our time. The west coast of the US should be pretty safe, I would hope, but there's an alert out for the next 24 hours.

I am 12 units ( my last quarter) from graduating with my BS in Geology.
Believe me when i say that a quake in chile will NOT affect North America much more than a couple foot waves. Now a nation located geographically across from Chile (new zeland to japan and Hawaii) should start walking UPHILL
when I read the title i assumed a prediction for a Tsunami was headed for the west coast... Not gonna happen.

its not the size of the wave, its supposed to be traveling at like 500mph before it hits hawaii.... so how fast would it be traveling before it hits the west coast?

It's all about angle of inflection.
They (Chile) are oriented (relatively) parallel to us. So we should not feel much. Perpendicular oriented territories are always the most affected. Since our subduction zone's slip off the west coast is accomodated as the San Andreas' Strike Slip motion; It makes California an unlikely candidate for tsunami wave action.

LoL. Hahaaaa
Cali is home to a subducting plate off the coast in the ocean. Subduction causes massive dropouts in the Earth's crust which cause Tsunamis. Our Subduction creates almost none of these dropouts because our plate tectonic "dropout" slip is made up for in the north/south movement of the San Andreas Fault.

I'm in santiago right now and it was madness last night. I was in the 3rd story of some run down hostel and had to evacuate in the dark down some janky stairway (drunk of course) we got outside and it was not a whole lot better with concrete falling from the buildings into the streets. Conception got the worse of it and things are getting back to normal here. My flight is on monday and the airport is shut down for a min 24 hours but sounds like it will be good to go monday. Flights are at least arriving today.
Anyways. Chile Rocks, literally. I saw a group of yota crawlers in Valaparaiso that looked ready for the hammers. Surfed a head high wave on a blow up alligator at pichilemu and went downhill cycling in the andes......good times.

I'm glad you're okay man! If possible, could you try to contact a friend who lives in Santiago? We can't get a hold of her.

By freak chance I was in a beach front cottage in Pacific Beach saturday night. It was *AMAZING* how high the water got, it came up on to the patios of the beach bars. :/ Sunday morning the place was a mess.
Prayers go out to the kids in Chili. I hope the recovery time is quick.

I was in long beach saturday afternoon, by the queen mary. some of the boats at the docks were nose up still hooked to thier mooring lines, sitting in the mud. the water at the docks dropped over 8 feet so sayeth the news. crazy stuff.
