aw4 spline count

is there anyway to tell the spline count of a 87 aw4 trans with out pulling the transfer case., i scored a 241OR rocktrac rubicon transfer case..the rocktrac is a 23 short spline. from what i have found is it could be either 21 or 23 spline.

I am curious, will a 4 cyl. 21 spline transfer case work for above application?
