thanks guys. the iro kit is pretty awesome it was very easy install and didnt run into any problems at all and it works perfect with tnt unibody stiffeners. my buddy has the clayton kit on his zj and he was pretty impressed with the overall look and handling of them.

as for handling it is great, you would never know there isnt a passenger side upper arm. ive takin it through whoops at 40+, jumps, bumps mostly prerunning so far, this weekend ill be testing out the crawling abilities at the TDS jeep run in truckhaven.

the wheels are eagle alloys dont know which ones just bought them off some guy and rattle canned em black with a silver lip.

Awesome, reason I ask is I have some wheels that look exactly the same and have been thinking of painting them black myself, they look good!

the roof rack was custom built. i bought it off a friend. the rack is adjustable with heim joints and folds back and bolts on different mounts when your not using the lights.

ChaseN- dont hate on zjs!!! hahah jk thanks man.

dirbagxj the seats are the twisted stitch APEX model.

Looks awesome, always cool (but rare) to see a ZJ built up for the faster stuff. I've been looking at the IRO kit for my build, primarily due to price. Good to know it handles well at speed. Do the control arm mounts just use the two stock crossmember bolts and then four more through the pinch seam?

Also you mentioned "front and rear unibody plating," do you know of a source for that or will you be making something custom? I've been looking all over and it seems like XJs have more (and better) options for unibody plates than the ZJs do.

Actually the whole aftermarket seems better for XJs, guess we're supposed to be using our rigs for grocery getting! :D

Nice build!

yes, it bolts to the pinch seam. and uses the stock mounting holes too.

shaffers offrad and temper-mental offroad make the front plates and i think shaffers does the rears too not sure.

but yeah its been a PITA trying to find parts to make this thing the way i want it. very little is available or its custom work haha

heres progress on the bedcage. the hoops are 4130 chromoly and the crossbars will be out of DOM. we changes up the idea for the looks of it. still going to have the 2 vertical standing tires, bar in front and back to hold it, and the middle will be dimple die plated shut. it will be finished tomorrow,

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b223/dunerocker/bedcageee.jpg

i reallly like the way that looks. looks like if you left it like that you would still have a good amount of cargo space... i wouldnt mind having a similar set-up on my xj...

cool build. i've always been curious to see how a 3 link would hold up to speed...does the caster adjuster ever come loose after a hard hit or a run through the whoops? I wonder what a 3 link would do at a 70mph run at some whoops...

I've got the RK 3 link front and bomb stuff all the time. Im building a 4.7 now because I run out of motor and can't go faster. lol So far it has handled everything really well.

grandrunner
March 3rd, 2010, 20:00
the 3 link handles great, bombed it through woops going 50mph and got it up to 75 at the glamis sand drags, no problems with the castor adjustment at all. i always double check it though to make sure everything is tight.

i was thinkin about puttin a shifter boot to cover it. gunna have it out all weekend at tds so well see how much dust gets in. dont really gop muddin either it rains like 3 times a year here haha

and anyone with a broken motormount bracket...i pray you never have to change it. had to remove the track bar mount, airbox and steering column just to get all the bolts off. and goodluck if your doing it alone. took me just over 3 and a half hours jus to put on the bracket and 1 motormount. tomorrow looks promising for the other. haha

You should seriously take a look at the mounts from T&J's that reinforce the block side of things too.

yeah its in my original post that im gunna get the t&j upper mounts. they make them for the zj xj and wj. talked to them about it at the offroad expo they just didnt list them on there site. also they have the sliders and frame stiffeneners for the grand. doesnt matter about the engine size for the zj there all the same frame setup for mounting points.

also just got back from the TDS jeeprunn! man what a time!!!! had to show people what a grand could do in the notches at night!!! and also today was a mudfest fun doing endless donuts and playing in the notches and trails.. anyone see me??

Who makes that truss?
tnt d30 truss kit

Been looking at their truss kits, with all the add-ons (control arm mounts, shock mounts, etc.) they are a little pricey but make the job a lot easier. Considering HP30/8.8" in my ZJ since they make the trusses which should make things a lot easier.

March 17th, 2010, 19:49

grandrunner
March 30th, 2010, 17:10
i dont know yet, i dont think it will because the highest point on the truss is the uca mount and it never hit with my 5.5in lift. on the stock mount.

did you make the 5* bend on the tie rod? or is there something else wrong with it?

grandrunner
April 5th, 2010, 17:10
no i didnt have to bend mine it all works fine, its just the truss uses a different mounting bracket for the trac bar. so i had to cut out the stock steering and stabilizer bracket. hopefully ill be gettin my otk steering ordered on friday.

Cache96
April 5th, 2010, 18:46
have you checked the ballastic fab heim steering? it looks pretty good.

Cache96
April 5th, 2010, 19:57
oh ok.. nevermind.. its not OTK

crazyjim
April 6th, 2010, 01:17
It can be OTK, it's just a matter of how you want to set it up. If you wanted to make it OTK, and run it like an inverted T setup, all you'd have to do is weld some tabs (reinforced of course) to the tie rod and connect the drag link to it. I know there's some pictures floating around in this section somewhere...

Of course keep in mind, with this style steering, you're going to experience the infamous "Tie Rod Roll" that JCR customers complain about, because you're essentially building the same style steering with heims instead of TRE's.

Your other option is to go the route I'll be going and get the BTF D30 high steer bracket. Puts both the tie rod and drag link in double sheer.

150 doesn't sound too bad, is that just the bracket, or do the heims come with it?

Your other option is to go the route I'll be going and get the BTF D30 high steer bracket. Puts both the tie rod and drag link in double sheer.

150 bones.

Double sheer >>>>>>>>>>>> single sheer

That single sheer setup on that pitman arm just scares the bejeesus out of me.

You should sell that truss and make a custom lower axle truss... much stronger and you can still use those IRO arms. :D
Just a thought!

grandrunner
April 14th, 2010, 10:42
i thought about it. but im already 700 bucks deep into that axle. and no ones gunna care if its new and just regeared. cuz some have different gears and still need to do my gussetts on it too.. haha if i cant sell the iro kit. ill have to modify the arm which will be another 200 bucks to hack it redo the arm and make a new gusset.

Cache96
April 14th, 2010, 11:13
yea thats true...well it might be cheaper to hack the IRO arms then paying for other arms.

grandrunner
April 14th, 2010, 13:31
yeah im still debating on what to do if they dont sell by next week ill prob jus hack em myself n make it work haha. i dont have the fab skills but i have an idea of what needs to be done. i got someone who can do it for me. just want that to be last resort though.

huuuge update:

got the knckles reemed and steering put on, the new long arms adjusted and positioned the axle, then it was off to shop#2 for c gussets, the other link so can connect the 4link, and maybe notch the crossmember if the driveshaft rubs. also the shock mounting points will be lowered about an inch. hopefully get to take it out during the week and on the weekend. pics to follow hopefully tonight.
