I've been reading every post I could find regarding exhaust manifold replacements, have come away with some really good info. but can't seen to find a good recommendations for replacing a pre-'91. I assume the one I keep seeing at http://www.autopn.com/store/pc/viewprd.asp?idProduct=20009 won't work on my '89. Of course, I don't want to spend a fortune on this. Any suggestions?

That's because the EGR valve was deleted starting with the 1991 model year.
There are pre-OBD exhausts out there, I'd start by checking with Borla, Banks, and Pacesetter, since I seem to recall all three of them being involved with pre-OBD XJ and MJ.
Alternatively, if you find one you like, you can call the company directly and see if they can put a bung for the EGR tube in one of their manifolds. I think they're otherwise pretty much the same until 1995/1996 or so, so that remains an option (the intake ports were changed for 1991, but I don't think the exhuast ports were changed until 1999 or so.)
